More Wilder Nights

Consummate local showman Webb Wilder's quicker with a joke than a smoke, but he doesn't shy away from a bittersweet tune. Brewing a hot gumbo of country-flavored roots rock, Wilder's as much an entertainer as a musician, but that gives neither short shrift. He hasn't settled into cultdom so much as it settled around him, and you need no further evidence than his latest, More Like Me. Wilder sprinkles five originals with a balance of well-chosen covers among the dozen tracks. Heartbroken paeans like the R&B-tinged "Too Cool for Love" and the light, folksy ballad "She's Not Romantic" show he's not above well-turned sentimentality, while the title track joins Roky Erickson's "Don't Slander Me" and soulman Eddie Hinton's "Still Water Runs Deep" in shaking loose the party.
