Subject: Webb, Poetry and Metaphors
I've just started teaching poetry to my 6th grade reading class as we are winding up the year. I'm using Webb's, "Cold Front", as an example of metaphorical poems. I had the students read the lyrics first (they just assumed it was a narrative poem), and during our discussion, one kid said, "I get it! He means this woman is cold hearted! My dad always says the song by Foreigner, 'Cold as Ice' was written for my mom." God I hope I haven't started a family fight. By the way, they enjoyed the song after I told them it was a tune by one of my all time favorites.

Let me suggest that you delve into the imagery and lyrical beauty of "The Rest (Will Take Care of Itself)" and maybe juxtapose it with "The Raven" or "Annabelle Lee" or something similar by Edgar Allen Poe. "The Rest" is a lesson in poetry and truth.

I've always thought it was sort of like what Poe would have written if he had grown up in some place like Pelathatchie.

We are actually tackling Poe's "Raven" on Monday.

The first Webb Wilder tune that I heard was "One Taste of the Bait".

Hearing the line "One taste of the bait is worth the pain of the hook..." immediately made me a Webb Wilder (and R.S. Field) fan for life.

Fall in Place is beautifully poetic, not to mention chock full of metaphor.
