Subject: Has Bob Seger been listening to a lot of WW lately?
Just picked up Bob's latest CD, "Ride Out." It has covers of two songs Webb's covered before, "The Devils Right Hand" (Steve Earle) and "California Stars" (Woodie Guthrie).

Webb's covers of these were two true favorites of mine; Webb, you should start performing "Stars" live again. It was fantastic!

** Bonus fun fact: When I restyled this website several years ago, "California Stars" was my inspiration for the visual theme.

Bob's late to the party on both counts. EVERYBODY has covered "Devil's." We were among the very first few folks to cover Steve's fine song but, shortly thereafter lots of folks began recording it. "California Stars" is one of those (and the best ) unfinished Woody Guthrie songs (lyrics only) that Billy Bragg and/or Wilco set to music and reorded on the Grammy award winning "Mermaid Avenue" album. I fell in love with the song and started singin' it back in the early 2000s. The band just kind of fell in behind me. We never really "worked it up"...just started playin' it. Thanks, Omatic! WW

Wow - never heard Webb and the boys do 'California Stars.' But then again I moved out west back in '99 and haven't seen Webb in person since - only on the Interwebb. Heck perhaps my wife can become a fan since that is her favorite song!

No offense to Steve Earle, but he might be tired of "Devil's". We saw him a couple of years ago and he just sort of ran through it.
Webb really does the song justice, either live or the CD version (which is also LIVE, of course).
The lyrics to "California" are so simple and beautiful, it's hard to believe Woody never got to finish it. The lovely melody was written by Jeff Tweedy and the late Jay Bennett, who played keyboards and guitar in Wilco..
