Greetings musical guru's, I am in need of some advice. My jam group had its first paid gig last Saturday and one thing we learned was that running everything thru the PA is gonna be easier to balance than 4 amps cranked WAY up! I need some suggestions on decent mikes for amps. We probably will just drape the mikes over the front instead of on a boom to cut back on clutter on stage. One friend of mine who is a great jazz player said he's always had good luck with Shure SM57's. Any advice or suggestions will be appreciated. next we need a different Pa monitor with more channels but that's another day. Thanks for your help.

Pretty hard to go wrong with a SM57. I like to use them with a desktop mike stand and flexible gooseneck with the mike on a 45 degree angle to the axis of the speaker.

Thanks for the replies. Is the 57 a decent vocal mike also? I may get 2 mikes so I can do some backing vocals. Maybe a SM58 for vocal and SM57 for the amp??? Or just stick with the 57's?? Inquiring minds, ya know!!

58 for vocal and 57 for amp is a good way to go because although they're basically the same, with the 58 you get the built-in pop filter/spit screen.

Some folks like 57s for vocals but, I always prefer a 58. Lots of great electric guitar stuff has been recorded (as well as miked live) with 57s. WW

Thanks for the insight. I've been makin' a list of stuff I need to get... cables, strings, now some mikes, stand, new guitar straps, strap locks, etc,etc. Come on, tax refund!!! It's amazing how expensive this "hobby" can get!!
