Friday was quite possibly the best performance I have ever seen by Webb and the boys,Bob Williams wore out every guitar in his arsenal,Jimmy smacked the skins right off the drums,Tom knocked a few pictures off the walls with that Base,and Webb was in Rare form,guys what a show,Louise and I didn't hang around for the next band,that was the best music fix we've had in a long time, the house was packed,and everyone was having a fantastic time.Prior to the show,Louise and myself had the pleasure of hosting,Frank and Alex,Tater and Dolly,Susan (thank you for the gift,you shouldn't have) Christina (Scattergun CP) Tater brought along a friend and if I just had 2 more brain cells I could remember your name,was it Neal,anyway a nice meal at our place before the show,along with Christinas homemade Sangria made for a perfect evening,thanks to everyone for coming and hope you had as much fun as we did.

Thank you Bill and Louise for hosting the pre-show BBQ! It was fun to catch up with everyone before heading over. It amazes me every time I get together with you guys how much of a family (for lack of a better word) this Webb-board crew feels like. This was the first time I got to sit and chat with Frank, and I felt like I'd known him for ages. Alex, it wsa great to finally meet you in person -- you are a trip! This band and this board are truly good people and I feel honored to be a part of it.

Now, enough of my mush....I did retrieve a setlist -- but not the OFFICIAL one that Tom had. (I believe Lady Au Gratin got that one) So, I will post what I have and what I can remember...(all those Corona's did a number on me!)

It was a great night, which for several of us began with the cookout at Bill and Louise's house. They are such gracious hosts, and the food was fantastic. Buffy, Dylan (spelling?), and the cat were sweet little creatures. I think I want a Min Pin now. I think that the cats Snort, Pepper, and Mollie Jane would love a dog. Bill and Louise have a beautiful home.

It was nice to see everyone. A fellow named Robert had come in during the break, stood around for a bit, and then asked if he could have the extra chair at the table where Alex and I were sitting. We started talking, and he told me the only thing that he knew about the band was that they'd had a song on the radio at one time: Human Cannonball. Oh, boy. The poor fellow needed to be educated a bit, so I took it upon myself to fill him in on a few details about WW&BTNX. He asked me if I was local, and when I told him I had driven from Bristol, Virginia, he was surprised. He was even more surprised that a couple of folks had come up from Kingsport, and three had even ridden motorcycles from Ohio to see Webb at The Coffee Pot. He realized that Webb and the guys have quite the dedicated following of people willing to travel far and wide for a show. Robert was an incredibly nice guy, and he loved the music. He commented that the guys looked as if they were having fun up there onstage. I told him that they always do. At the end of the show, Robert told me that he'd be checking out this website and that I would be seeing him again at other Webb shows. New recruits are always good.

Webb, you never cease to amaze. I'm as awestruck as I was from the first show I ever saw. Jimmy, you are a force to be reckoned with. Tom, YOU ROCK (but I am sure that you have heard that many times before)! And, Bob, your very presence is a gift to the music world. A pox upon Tony for choosing steam engines over you guys!

I hated to miss an evening with great friends and great music. I was invited by the crew of the Three Rivers Rambler in Knoxville to spend the day with them on their Baldwin 1925 built Washington & Lincolnton #203 steam locomotive. After 12 hours in the 110 degree cab, I was missing the air conditioning too. It made me respect the guys who operated steam locomotives every day even more than I already did. Those guys were real engineers. What we do these days pales in comparison.

Eric, we're going to the Grey Eagle next weekend to catch Webb and the guys once again. Maybe you can make that trip. How did the RFL events go?

P.S. Let me clarify something. Right now, both Tony and I are planning to be at the Grey Eagle. I can't promise that Tony will make it if somebody calls and says something like, "Hey, let's go ride the Zamboni this weekend!"

hey, thanks to whoever brung the cheese to Bill's house!

Let me echo others' appreciation to Bill & Louise for their hospitality [I think their dogs could sense I'm a cat guy, Tony! :-)] and good eats. It was obvious, tho, judging from Bill subsequently leading us on such a circuitous route to the Coffee Pot, that he wanted to make sure we didn't find our way BACK to his house.

As for the show - even from my perch at the swag table (way back in the far corner, with all my friends), it was hoppin' good, as evidenced by those in the back of the room who danced the whole evening away. Speaking of swag, I was also able to observe how impressed many of the "less familiar" were with Webb's accessibility. I was amused at the number of "you reckon Webb will sign this?" queries I fielded during the evening (one guy upped his CD purchase from one to three on my promise that yes, Webb would indeed sign them). I think your cordiality won you as many converts as your music, WW!

Thank you ALL! Frank, let me especially thank you for serving so valiantly at the swag table at the aformentioned java dispenser. Thank you, Sir! big thanks to son, Alex, too. Indeed, Tater and Dolly deserve big thanks for similar duty on the two subseqeuent evenings. Gotta stop there. Dolly and I had a great time in Roanoke. We also were recipients of the hospitality of Bill and Louise prior to the show. Thanks to both of you for making us feel very welcome in your home. I agree with Christina that the folks we have met through Webb's shows are like a big family. Its actaully probably better than a lot of families in that you don't have to live with some of them but still like them a lot and enjoy seeing them again soon. Gonzo and Louise, you always have a room reserved at the Taterosa! (Only if Louise Drives you there). I agree with Frank that Bill took us on a 48 mile drive back to the Coffee Pot which is 3 miles from his house. I'll never be able to find my way back. Coincidence? Maybe.
Our friend Neil from Akron got discouraged by the 60 miles of rain we rode through to get to Roanoke and then the clouds hovering over the city the next morning caused him to head on back home rather than continue the Richmond-Arlington circuit. We never saw another drop of rain. Neil told me to relay to the band that he'd never seen them play so well before. The band was tight! Thanks to Susan for getting us back to the hotel. It turned out we had registered at the same hotel as Susan. When last I saw her that night, she was attempting to park a 9 foot wide car into a 7.5 foot wide parking place and I do believe she did it!
Tony, I was keeping my eye on that Richard feller and he did seem to be quite the gentleman. I look forward to seeing all of you again soon at Johnson City.

Yup, Tater, I did manage to get the car parked. I gave up trying to simply pull into the spot and backed in instead. That was a miracle in itself; I left the cars on either side of mine totally unscathed. I wish I had known we were in the same hotel before we went to Bill's; I could have saved you cab fare. We may have to do a little coordinating from now on. Tony and I are always glad to ferry the Taters around.

Rock last Friday: Webb Wilder; Jamie McLean Band

Webb Wilder was holding musical court at the Coffee Pot. Here's a situation where Wilder, "the last of the boarding house men," and the Pot, the old roadhouse that's on the National Register of Historic Places but still maintains a dive-ish charm, are a perfect fit.

If Wilder's doing anything, he's doing roadhouse-ready music. His latest album, "More Like Me," is one of the best he's ever recorded, and it was well-represented. Wilder's own songs -- this is his most prolific work to date -- "Too Cool For Love" and "She's Not Romantic," were laid back but cool.

Wilder and his band powered through some of the disc's covers. "Don't Slander Me" (Roky Erikson) was psychedelic, with Wilder screaming notes well past the top of his baritone. It's great to hear that he can still get it vocally, even after all these decades of touring and recording.

Longtime Wilder bandmates Jimmy Lester (drums/harmony vocals) and Tom Comet (bass/harmonies) were their usual solid but sly selves. Wilder has a rotation of guitarists, based on who is playing with whom and when at a given time. On Friday, Bob Williams was onstage, and I'd swear he is as good or better than anyone I've heard with Wilder, save maybe original Beatnecks guitarist Donnie "The Twangler" Roberts.

Williams has obviously listened to his fair share of David Grisson and Sonny Landreth. The Landreth connection shows up more in his single-note picking than his slide work, a sentence which adds up to one word -- hard but atmospheric.

Wilder always improves as a guitarist -- always with the tasty and slashing rhythms to complement his lead player, and often with a few neat solos of his own. Where both he and Williams really excel, though, is as a pair of tone farmers. From vibratos set to sound like spinning speaker cabinets to an overdriven crunch strong enough to give AC/DC a run for its money, these cats can make their axes sound hot.

Honestly, Wilder and his band rock as hard as they ever did. He's aged well, and he realizes his crowd has aged, too, so his shows are happening earlier. This one started before 9 p.m. I hope that on future dates, more kids will come out to see how it's done -- then head out to later shows.

"Tone Farmers": That article was really good and it describes Webb and the band pretty well. The thing I found interesting is that phrase "Tone Farmers". What an excellent band name that would be!
