Subject: Today is Senior Skip Day!
Wow! Today is the traditional Senior Skip Day at my school. I had all of two kids in my first-period English 12 class. One is at school, because he isn't doing well in government and was afraid to miss the class (however, he is leaving after that), and the other was prompted by love (his little girlfriend is a tenth-grader and he wanted to be here to spend time with her). I had sixteen out in my class alone, and I counted 119 absent seniors (out of about150) on the attendance report. My class didn't have a Senior Skip Day, and I was such a goody-goody with nearly 11 years of perfect attendance and such strict parents that I wouldn't have skipped anyway. Does anyone here have an interesting story involving Senior Class antics to tell?

Sorry Sue ... no good stories from me ... like you - long streak of perfect attendance dating way back into elementary school ... wasn't worth giving up for one day of goofing off... I did that all year long anyway. But we had one where I graduated from - Elizabethton High School '88. Just didn't take part -

I had a REALLY bad attitude in high school. Took the ACT and SAT tests in the 11th grade. Made sufficent scores to qualify for early admittance to college without 12th grade. Thought I'd go to the 12th grade anyway and kinda good off. Got there, and it sucked! Got to have long hair (I had it then) in the 11th grade. They made me cut it...over and over again in the 12th. Got fed up. Quit before 9 weeks tests. Wouldn't have done well on them. Started winter quarter at USM before Christmas. Took about six years to get a four year degree: a non teaching BS in English. The rest is history? Mystery? WW

Some of the guys in my senior class , the drinking crowd, painted an old car to look like a can of Schlitz Malt Liquor and carried it into the central courtyard of Kirkwood High School. They had to take the wheels off and turn it sideways to fit it in there. Then they used the flagpole as a spindle for a bunch of old tires that had to be cut off. The Janitors hated them!
I had nothin' to do with it but it was pretty funny to look out from class and see the car sitting there.

Senior year was when I really started letting my hair get long... ya' know that was cool with the Hair Band days then and all... didn't cut it much til after college - in fact wore it kinda long for a while even after I got my first job...etc. I remember Webb wearing it longer out the back of his hat for a while -- plus if folks will look on the special features of the Live DVD = you will see some photos on there - one really wild haired dude.... playing guitar... college photo I assume Webb. I have seen some older stuff where even Jimmy had long hair ... no really... but it was all in back (party in the back as they say).... I was just as guilty.

Anyway, it took me 4-1/2 years for my 4 year degree - but as you told the governor in Horror Hayride on the same subject.... "who's countin'..."

The final count on senior absences today was 129 out of 159. One of the funniest things our seniors do traditionally is give the principal a little gift as they go through the line to receive their diplomas. I think that one year each kid gave him a condom (school mascot: Trojans!), and last year each one gave him a sinker I believe. He said later that after stuffing so many of those in his pockets (dozens), he thought that he might just lose his pants. It's really hard to tell what this year's graduating class will do.

P.S. I had an interesting 7th period today. The agriculture teacher had to leave early, so the secretary asked me to cover the class. I sort of taught stuff about soil and weathering. I learned quite a bit in the process.

The class of 75 Ervinton High School had a senior picnic at the Breaks Interstate Park..Lots of talk about people "missing" in the woods.. I on the other had was the responsible person and went to work that day at the local radio station that I had a job at. I worked {not sure if worked is the proper word} my way through high school and college then got a real job on the railroad....

I can't recall a skip day at good old Unicoi County High School. My second semester of my senior year, I was in the band room hiding out 3 out of the 6 periods of the day. I had quit ROTC at the end of the first semester, had driver's ed one period and only drove one day of the week, and had 6th period band. It was like I was skipping half a day, everyday, that semester.

I am now officially a senior and I skipped breakfast today.
I know that Glen Harness will now fine me for breaking the Credo as he pointed out in his "confessional" thread. ..."I didn't eat hard today!"

Our high school (Hampton High 1979) USED to have senior skip day until about 2 years before I graduated. They would take a trip somewhere for a couple of days, actually. That all ended when one of the jocks was caught in his room with 3 of three half-dressed cheerleaders. That took care of that. No more senior skip/trip days there. By the time our class got out of school our big day was our last day and all of the seniors (all 26 of us) left school early to drive around town honking our horns until Sheryl's got stuck on and we had to stop so that some of the boys could unhook it. Whoo hoo!
Oh, well......

We didn't have a senior skip day, back when the Dead Sea wasn't even sick yet.

However, in two years when I turn 60, I will be a senior again, so I may have to take a second look.

We had a Skip Day in 10th, 11th, and 12th grades. A bunch of us used to go to the top of Paris Mountain, which had a big rocky face overlooking downtown Greenville, SC. There was the expected drinking, carousing, etc. All before 10AM. I think the tradition sort of ended for a while after a guy fell off the cliff. He wasn't killed but from the looks of him he probably wished he had been. He only had about half of his skin left after falling no telling how far. Also a couple of fairly large casts. Most of the rest of us learned a lesson from his experience. Excessive drinking and cliffs don't mix. In fact, excessive drinking doesn't mix well with a lot of things.

Now I guess I'm a lightweight. Only 4 or 5 beers tends to make me unable to remember the words to songs that I wrote.
