Subject: Down Home - what an experience!
My first live Webb and the Beatnecks show, and I'm hooked! In my 60 years I've seen a lot of performers, and I can truthfully say you guys are in the top 5! Heck, I almost got thrown out of a professional wrestling show ( that's what they called it!) at 6 for heckling the wrestlers...so I've had some good times! Last night was fantastic! You can look for my furry face at lots more shows!
Thanks to Susan for getting us there and turning me on (to Webb!!!) and making it possible to meet everyone - Sandy and I look forward to seeing you all again!

You are what you is!
You are what you is!
The Down Home was an experience this past weekend. On Friday Night we were treated to Mr. Dave Sutherland who performed a set prior to Webb coming on at 9PM. He warmed the crowd up for Webb and the boys and even said that Webb Wilder was a good "Cool Down" band for his warm up set.
Each night Webb played an acoustic set then an electric set. I personally like all electric but enjoyed the acoustic sets as well. The club was a near sell-out on Friday and was standing room only by 7:30PM on Saturday for a show that started at 9PM. There was a line 60 or 70 people long outside the bar when the doors opened at 6PM on both nights. Johnson City loves Webb Wilder!
Saturday's show was the best! Webb was very much "on" on both nights. He amazed us with his guitar prowess and blends in well with Big Bob Williams on the other side of the stage. Bob is just as good on the acoustic guitar as he is on electric. "Jimmy Reed" is Bob's showpiece tune and he never fails to deliver a chilling and soulful rendition of the Kevin Gordon song.
Jimmy Lester is the most energetic drummer since Keith Moon (hence "Keith Moonshine"). I don't know how he puts out that kind of energy but he pulls it out from somewhere.
Tom Comet sounded better than I've ever heard him before. He was using an old Acoustic 360 Bass Amp Head along with his normal Amp and speakers and he produced a sound with a lot more punch to it. Tony King and I spent a lot of time during the electric set just listening to Tom and Norma (his new bass) and their driving new sound. Tom Comet is the Master of Fuzztone and demonstrated it several times during Saturday's show. Tom Comet Rules!!!!
On Saturday while waiting for an encore, Tony King wanted to hear Jumpin Jack Flash and I was yelling for Gloria. Webb Wilder, being the accomodating electrifying artist he is, played both of them. It was a real treat. Thanks for putting on two great shows this weekend guys! I got the set lists but left them at home. If no one else posts them by tomorrow, I will put them up here.
There were a lot of Webb Board regulars there. Dolly and I got to sit with Susan and Tony. Others who showed up were our good friends Mike and Dori, Garland and his son and friend, Yardmaster (who really is a yardmaster in real life as it turns out), Roger, Frank, Christina and even Eric put in a Cameo appearance on Friday.
Spanky was very satisfied with the accomodations at the Red Roof Inn. They even have a dog walking area. He wants to go back there again this summer.

Shut up, Abner.
Shut up, Abner.
I want to just post before heading off to haul another load of Kentucky to North Carolina. I believe Saturday nights show at the Down Home was the best I have seen yet. It is also probably the most people I have seen in the Down Home. Friday night was great as well, especially with Dave Sutherland's set. Hope he gets back on this side of the pond soon.

I got to hear a bunch of my favorites this time. I love "Is Anybody Going to San Antone". Great addition which I hope sticks to the set list for a while. Like Tater said, the encore could not get any better as it was Saturday. "Gloria" and "Jumpin' Jack Flash" tore the house down. "Hoodoo Witch" and "Slow Death" have really shot to the top of my favorites list.

Webb was in great form and sounded great both vocally and on guitar. I like the sound he gets out of that Tele. It is really tight. I really enjoyed talking music with you after the show. I would love to have more time to talk one of these days. I told Susan a long time ago, you are a music encyclopedia.

Bob Williams is the ultimate. I have never paid as much attention to a guitar player (simply because I can't play a guitar much more than a G chord) but I love to watch and listen to Bob. He is chocked full of creativity and sound. Rock Solid. Makes me want to learn maybe a C and D chord. Bob, you ROCK! I guess I could say you pedal too, because that steel stuff kills me.

Jimmy Lester is just incredible. I can't put into words how incredible his timing and taste is. Awesome!

Last, but certainly not least, TOM COMET RULES!!! I wanted to sit on his side of the stage Saturday night just to pay attention to him. Tom's tone with Norma is outstanding. He also was laying down some groove in "Sudden Stop". Reminded me of James Jamerson on the Motown stuff he was on and Carol Kaye on Stevie Wonder's "I Was Made To Love Her". I loved the fills he put in "King of the Hill". Even during the acoustic set, he ROCKED!! The fuzzbass thrown in on "Hoodoo Witch" was perfect too. Do you give lessons Tom?

The whole weekend was really entertaining both onstage and off. I think everyone knows what I am talking about. I introduced two friends of mine and their wives to Webb for the first time this weekend. I think they will be repeats.

I want to add more, but it's time to go haul da coal. Great seeing everyone this weekend. Absolutely the best folks I have ever met right here on this board.

Set Lists: Webb deviated from the original set lists quite a bit but Frank, Tony and I tried to amend them to the best of limited abilities. Webb played 26 songs on Friday and 30 on Saturday. Where else are you going to get that many songs out of band in one evening?

Didn't they do She's Not Romantic on Friday ? It could have been the Corona's talking, but I thought I recalled hearing that one. (and liked very much, btw) I also heard through the grapevine that they did Slow Death on Saturday. Still bummed I missed that show~

...and I'd like to request Mississippi Honky Tonkin for all further shows -- loved it! ;-)

I only got to hear the Electric Set on Friday - I commented some on a different thread then this - it was a great set - but did anyone notice the "Who" ending to one of the songs... I've heard the Beatles ending plenty of times -- I think the first Who ending I've heard.... does anyone remember which song that was - I looked at Tater to say -- cool Who ending ... but WW starting chatting about the next song - and I forgot to say it..... Frank? Susan? Tony? Y'all remember the one I'm talking about?

And I'll second what Yard said ... Tom Comet Rocks - so he should get a Bass Solo somewhere in there - I'll bet the guys can work that in somewhere.

You've heard the old joke, right?
Apologies in advance to all the bass players, I LOVE the bass but...

A westerner, on safari in the depths of Africa, arises from a troubled night of sleep to hear the throbbing sound of drums coming from the jungle. He asks the first person he sees "What's with those drums?"
"No worries, we love the drums" the man replies, so the visitor goes on to breakfast. Later in the day he notices that the constant drumming has increased in tempo and intensity, so he asks another local what's going on. This time the reply is "No worry, no problem as long as you hear the drums".
After supper the drumming becomes so loud and threatening that the foreigner is scared to death. He steps out of his tent, but everyone is still acting normal and unworried. He approaches a man to ask once again about the ominous sound, but just then the drumming stops.

Suddenly there is panic. The locals all begin to scream in terror and run wildly to seek shelter. As one terrified native passes him the visitor grabs the man's arm and hollers "What's wrong? Why are you all so scared?"
As the man pulls away he puts his hands over his ears and yells "Drum solo is over!"

"Now comes BASS SOLO!"

That is the BEST bass player joke!
To my way of thinking, I'm soloing all the time- it's just that other people are playing along with me! The guitar players don't stand there and shred by themselves when they solo, and during those passages, I try to listen and complement what they're playing. I aspire to hit a zone in the middle ground between Joey Spampinato with NRBQ and Jack Bruce with Cream, who are fantastic improvisers within the context of their bands' music, particularly during solo sections.
As for the fuzz, Tater most generously supplied me with the Acoustic 360, which has a fantastic fuzz sound as popularized by Larry Graham on Sly and the Family Stone's "Dance To The Music", among many others. Thanks again, Tater- YOU rock!

You are the BEST.
We want to hear you play the Fuzz Bass some day.

In the other version of that joke, the guy keeps saying "I don't like the sound of those drums!"
Finally an angry native sticks his head out of the jungle and hollers "Give us a break!"
"HE'S NOT OUR REGULAR DRUMMER!"

Thanks Webb - for the life of me I couldn't remember which song you used it on ... loved it by the way... sounded very fitting. And Tater is correct - for those of you who haven't heard it they used the "Won't get Fooled..." song ending -- sort of like an episode of CSI broke out all of a sudden. LOL.

Also, Tom you do compliment the fellows very well during their shredding sessions.... but I guess we are all looking for a sudden break out of Bass (especially with the new "Fuzz Box Voodoo" you are using) - - kind of like near the ending of the Paul Simon song "You can call me Al" ... or maybe a smokin' Billy Sheehan type riff or two.
