A big thunderstorm lit up the night in St. Louis on Friday evening as Webb, Jimmy, Tom and Bob lit up the inside of Lucas School House. It was a nice, loose show with a good crowd in attendance.Opener Farrell Webb had a big, adaptable voice and some schlocky material-not our thing but an interesting guy. Webb and the guys hit the stage with a lot
of energy and here's the "official" setlist:
Big Time
Only One
Sputnik
Cannonball
Lookin' Fool
Pretty Lights
Lonely
Poolside
Come Around (this song has developed nicely)
Farm
Shakes
Landlord (great version)
Slow Death (Flamin' Groovies!)
Hittin'
Miss Missy
Worried Life
Mississippi Honkey Tonk (??)
Pretty Is
Hannah
Flat Out
Tough
Late in the show, maybe after Pretty Is, Webb started singing the first lines of the old country chestnut "Long Black Limousine", done by everyone from Elvis to Gram Parsons. To his apparent surprise, Bob joined right in. Webb went on singin' in a half serious manner, Jimmie joined in, then Tom. They were just messing around but it sounded GOOD.
After "Hannah" (I thnik) somebody hollered for "Jimmie Reed". Webb checked to make sure Bob was comfortable with the song and they did a sweet, swampy version that the crowd loved.
Bob is a wonderful guitarist, a real pro. It was interesting to hear him put his own stamp on Webb's material, and he seems to be able to play just about anything. Nobody knocked his guitar collection off the stage, either.
Tom felt like he was in a bit of a rut with his playing so he changed his whole setup since the last time we saw him. Different bass, different (smaller) amp and he's using a pick instead of his fingers. Man, those are some major changes! He sounded fantastic, we could hear every note he played and the bottom end was strong. Webb left the HiWatt at home but maintained his trademark range of tones and cranked out some excellent solos. The overall sound was very good, the PA was near it's limits but we didn't quite need earplugs.
Chris (Brandmnjr) did a fine job filling in for wildhoney69 as Swagmeister-we missed you, Debb and Dave! Saw Jo and her family/friends, they get to see Webb three nights in a row. Wow. Afterwards I spoke to some people who turned out to be Kychopperfamily, sure was nice to see you folks. We had a great time talking to the band, Webb signed some stuff and we were off into the rain.
