I'm not much of a player, but do have a couple of guitars (cheap Yamaha strat copies), but have been considering upgrading to a Fender Telecaster. Since I don't have a ton of time to play I don't want to spend a fortune.

Question: are the introductory Fender Telecaster models decent guitars? Is there anything I should be looking for in a new guitar.

No two guitars are alike so, the trick is to get one that suits you regardless of the model. The weight, the feel of the neck and the inherent musicality or lack thereof is gonna be particular to each instrument. Having said that, the Mexican Fenders can be good. The Squier Classic Vibe series may be the bang for the buck right now. Shy of custom Shop price, the newly tweaked Fender Vintage series has some real fine stuff. Go get yer hands on some and see which one has a ring to it. WW

+1 to the Classic Vibe series. The only tricky part is that they can be hard to come across to play before you buy.

I've heard tell that the two colors of their 50's Telecaster have different pickups. Food for thought.
