He was revered there, not just because of the music he made but because he remained a regular guy and an Okie his whole life-even after moving to L.A., he lived in a trailer.
Met him after a show at Mississippi Nights in St. Louis back in 1991. He signed a poster for me and looked embarrassed when I told him how much I appreciated his music. He was playing a guitar synthesizer at the time, said he never used the synth function but it made it easy to dial in his effects. He always played with no apparent effort, often just barely touching the strings with his right index finger. His wife Christine Lakeland was playing second guitar in his band of Muscle Shoals pros.
BTW, everyone always called him John. The J.J. was just a way to distinguish him from the Velvet Underground's John Cale. |
