just now on my way home from work, I'm sitting at a light and this car to the left of me keeps inching up beside me. I look over and the passenger window of the boxy SUV goes down, it's some people I've never seen before but they look like people I'd know. The guy in the passenger seat looks at me for a moment then says "Thanks for supporting Webb Wilder." I have people ask me all the time what that sticker in my rear window means. I usually get a nod for the MS150 sticker or some words regarding the brewery sticker but no one has ever acted like they know what that mysterious WW sticker is all about. Wow, someone else in Houston is actually cool? I smiled the remaining 4 miles home!

I've been wondering if Webb's name was added to the new "WW" stickers with the gold printing because too many people were mistaking them as meaning "Weight Watchers"?


Cool that another motorist had "picked up on it".

There is a guy who lives a couple of streets over from my house who has a WW sticker on his truck. Reassures me that there are some great people in the neighborhood. :)

Nese, I think it's great that you had such an experience and that you shared the story. I am very happy when someone asks me who Webb Wilder is and when I talk with someone who already knows who Webb is. Tony and I are very fortunate that we live where we do (heck, we even live east of Webb Road). We are only 15-20 minutes from the Down Home and a few hours from Nashville, so we have the luxury of seeing Webb and the guys several times a year. I feel that my association with our "family" of Wilderians and the fact that I can say I actually know Webb Wilder and the Beatnecks put me in a really special "club." I tell my students that I know for a fact if I passed my favorite singer on the most obscure street in the entire world, the man would say hello to me and call me by name. And then I ask how many of them could say the same thing about their favorite singer. What you experienced is not only a big deal wherever you are, it is also very important.

Well, thanks for the various and many kind comments inscribed above, ya'll. Truth is, 20 or 30 (who's counting?) years into this thing, Tom and I figured we might not be able to afford the luxury of "mystery" any longer. We therefore, thought maybe a little MORE promotional content might not hurt the aesthetics of the sticker too much. In other words, we KNOW that not TOO many people know what it stands for! WW

I did pick up some of the new stickers @ WebbFest but haven't used one yet where it would be viewed by a large number of the public. I notice they DO have Webb Wilder printed on them. So I suppose if want to keep informing the world, use one of the old ones ;^

Wonder Warthog - the WW logo looks a lot like the logo that Wonder Warthog had on his costume. He was a super hero in a counterculture comic (maybe Nasty Tales?) that came out at the end of the sixties - early seventies. He was way cool.

Re: Wonder Warthog. Zap Comix was where he came from. I actually have 6 first editions (1-6) of Zap Comix. Wonder Warthog (he became Monder Morthog once when he put his constume on upside down) was one of my favorite characters along with The Checkered Demon and Captain Pissgums.

Wonder Warthog, The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers (and Fat Freddy's Cat) - all Gilbert Shelton. He sure knew how to draw and catch the mood of the times. His characters still make me laugh today!

Check out the prices on some of those Zap Comix on ebay. A few of them are worth a lot of money.

Another Zap! comix fan. Loved Robert Crumb's and S. Clay Wilson's characters. Also Mickey Rat, Captain Guts, and Doctor Atomic.

One of my biggest disappointments is reading about S. Clay Wilson's lecture at my school on the day AFTER his visit.

Aside from his cool art, R Crumb is a musician. We get a kick out of the old string-band stuff he plays with the Cheap Suit Serenaders.
