Why does R.S. Field not want Webb to play Hoodoo Witch?

Things change! Haven't owned horses in almost ten years. Started playin' "Hoodoo Witch" again after many years of not playin' it a coupla years ago. I have no idea why he didn't want us to play it back then. I do reserve the right to STOP playin' it again at any time! Seriously, we've been havin' fun with it lately but,...that could change, too! Although "Hoodoo Witch" isn't my favorite Webb tune, I can't imagine why the Ionizer wouldn't have wanted it played.

But the unplayed tune that I want to know about is "Animal Lover". I heard it at the first few Webb shows that I attended and liked it a lot, particularly Webb's intro of it being about "Love, lust, infidelity, and that feeling you get when you come home to find someone else's pickup truck parked in front of your trailer."

It never made it to a record and I haven't heard it played for a long time.

Care to share any info about it, Webb?

Well, first of all you have to realize that we're all nuts. if we aren't now, we sure were back then. "Animal Lover" is a very cleverly written R. S. tune. His original demo (as I recall) of the song was set to kind of (dare I say it) a rockabilly soundscape and musical back drop but, by the time we started playin' it in public we had turned it into some kind of epic-Rock, extended lentgth, Spinal Tap thing! We PROBABLY(just kinda speculating from an at times mercifully foggy memory) couldn't resolve our own musical differences about it much less please the author (R.S.) so decided to stop playin' it. Then the way things happen it just kinda gets out of the rotation, time passes and it kind of misses it's own moment. Goin' back to it might be fun but, not as much as finding something new. Never say "never," though. It has been fun revisiting "Hoodoo" and "Loud Music." We have a lot of the new album we want to play and are always looking for new ground to plow. You can definitely tell someone's been with us a long time if they remember "Animal Lover!" WW

Thanks a lot for the "Animal Lover" info.

I understand how a tune drops out of the rotation like that. It certainly happened with my band.

In this article from France, it mentions Webb's horses and such. Very cool indeed.

Enjoy!

I have a DVD of Webb playing for a public TV station in one of the Carolina's or Virginia's in the late 80s. They do a really cool ultra-smoldering version of Hoo Doo Witch. It had really morphed by the time it was put on Doo Dad. It's always been one of my favorites of his.
