In a first for WNCW (one of our favorite stations), they are adding a video simulcast for Friday's in-studio sessions. Webb will be their inaugural band for this and you can listen (and watch) live from 3pm Eastern at http://www.wncw.org . He'll be on about 40 min. or so with the whole band rocking out too. Then they are off to the Grey Eagle in Asheville where the doors are at 8pm and the band starts at 9pm. No opening act, so get there early. Relive the memories of WWIII Fest too. Compfy venue and plenty of AC! | |

Do you smell something? | Unfortunately, for reasons unknown to me, there was no video simulcast of the show. However, the audio was great, and you can download it from my Webb site. I was surprised to hear that the Beatnecks were Tom Comet, Marshall Richardson (drums), and Rick Kurtz (guitar). It never ceases to amaze me how well members from the Legion of Substitute Heroes perform. Has Rick ever played with Webb before? I don't remember hearing his name before. http://webbwilder.goatley.com/audio.html Hunter | |

Last night at the Grey Eagle was a blast, but I'm always up for more WW! Hunter does show his geek roots by the gratuitous Legion Of Substitute Heroes reference. And yeah, where did Rick "Colonel" Kurtz come from, anyway? The playing was top quality last night by all concerned. "Automobiles" sounded magnificent in particular. All the guitars were unified and powerful in sound, yet I could easily discern each line separately. Let's just say great mixing, too! | |

I had searched the board for his name, but didn't see it. Turns out that Webb had written a MySpace blog in which he described Colonel Kurtz's Norwegian tour of duty:
------------------------------------- The Beatnecks (they still thought we were going by "Nashvegans" over there...oh, well) on this trip were the inveterate Jimmy Lester and Tom Comet AND thorougly seasoned guitarist, although new to the WW camp, Rick Kurtz (Mortals, Hahavishnu Orchestra, Delbert McClinton, T. Graham Brown). None of the other six string sumbucks could make it. Lemme tell ya, Rick did about a month's worth of homework, one rehearsal with me (no bass, no drums) and that was ALL the preparation he had before the first downbeat of the first show. He totally shone. He's a great guy and a great player. -----------------------------

That Kurtz is a steely-eyed, flat-bellied professional!! Gotta love a player like that who makes it all easy. To quote the Book of P-Funk, the band was definitely on "The One" Friday night. Thanks to the band for making my weekend start out so happily. WW's music is like an old trusted friend who's always great to catch up with. | |
