Let's face it: Webb Wilder makes Webb Wilder records. If you thought Webb was suddenly going to reinvent what he and R.S. "The Ionizer" Field had invented, get a clue or two. These cats don't sell out - not for money, not for women, not for fame. Personally, I like Webb's sensitive, well written love songs, but what has always drawn me to the Last of the Full-Grown Men, the Idol of Idle Youth, has been his balls-to-the-wall rockers. Accompanied once again by maybe Nashville's best rock drummer, Jimmie "Lord of the Chevron Island" Lester, longtime bass player Tom Comet, Nashville underground mainstay George Bradfute and guitarist Joe McMahan, Wilder blows through rock and roll classics like "Ju Ju Man" and Roky Erickson's manic "Don't Slander Me" with all the aplomb of cat in a bucket of boiling water. If you don't like this one, you're probably having the wrong kind of thoughts about your step-daughter or a couple of sheep you saw in a pasture outside College Station.

Yep, that's me. | Confidence. Confidence is the first word that instinctively comes to my mind after listening to this wonderful new release by the last of the full-grown men. In a world where mere artistic competence would be met with out-stretched arms from an ever hoping public, Webb Wilder has succeeded once again to shun conformity to current popular trends by embracing the confidence he has consistently shown year after year. This is more than mere talent, more than that certain indefinable something that great artists just appear to be born with, this is skill- honed, and sharpened to perfection. Webb effortlessly blocks every waiting critics blow by responding with exceptionally written song after song like a well-trained martial artist who has been conditioned not to simply act, but react to his current surroundings.
Webb has again not failed to honor his chosen profession, and all who inquire may buy this album with the same confidence that went into making it.

His self-effacing persona give Wilder's music - which incorporates surf, country, hillbilly blues, classic rock and British invasion - a sense of fun and imagination. As a singer, guitarist, bandleader, filmmaker, and humorist, Webb may be roots-rock's only true Renaissance man, and this new CD finds him in great form.

Wilder has never made any thing other than fun records, and the streak continues on his new album, "More Like Me." For a guy who seems to set his parameters fairly strictly, the Last of the Full Grown Men finds plenty of room to stretch out. Roots connections abound. There's more than a little of the spooky wackiness of Screamin' Jay Hawkins on "Don't Slander Me," which closes with the otherworldly caution, "Don't put me down in a Martian zoo." "Ju Ju Man" is just a straight-ahead, Blasters-style rave up. As he often does, Wilder continues to poke around the '60s for inspiration. There's a real Byrds jangle to "Pretty Is As Pretty Does." Southside Johnny would feel perfectly at home in the barroom cadences of "Come Around," and the mid-tempo Brit-pop of "Too Cool For Love" would suit brother revivalists such as Nick Lowe or Marshall Crenshaw like a new Strat. With Wilder, there's always a cracker-barrel wit filtered through vintage hep cats like Link Wray. The title track is typical Webb-issue self awareness, with Wilder vowing to "study on the booties" and "get a feel for my deal." For those of us who love first-wave rock 'n' roll, it's an easy deal to share. - Dave Tianen, dtianen@journalsentinel.com

The Flamin' Groovies had a go at it, Nick Lowe covered it with Brinsley Schwarz, Dave Edmunds recorded it on "Get It" and Nick and Dave performed it together as Rockpile. Sooner or later somebody's going to have a radio hit with this cult classic. Maybe it'll be Webb! Legendary Texan Roky Erikson's "Don't Slander Me" is the longest and darkest track on the disc with Webb effectively capturing Roky's legendary demons, paranoia and howl. Wilder digs up another chestnut with Jimmy Swan's "Honky Tonkin' (In Mississippi)" and its Hank William's inspired lyrics: "You take a Miss and a sip and honky tonk all night long!" Not just a cover artist, Webb showcases his own songwriting on several tracks including "Too Cool For Love" and "Come Around". Stop by and visit Webb Wilder on MySpace and rock out to "Ju Ju Man" and some other fine tracks. Roots-rockers will dig "More Like Me" as well as Webb's first Blind Pig release, the live "Born to be Wilder". You can buy them both here! Contact Blind Pig Records and they'll send you a free catalog featuring all of their releases.

So hard I didn't notice I was going too fast and got pulled over. You've got to work at getting pulled over on I-55 between St. Louis and Chicago. I believe it was during Don't Slander Me.
Luckily, I only got a warning. I did tell him I was a little into the music. He chuckled and said it happens, but to be careful. So I'm thinking the man saw my WW sticker and was a fan himself. That's the in-my-head version anyway. To all involved, this is a FANTASTIC album. Congratulations all around. See you guys in a few weeks at the St. Louis weekend. See all my St. Louis Webb friends too. I missed December, so Im looking forward to making it up.

Veteran roots rocker Wilder does it up right here, blending his originals with a few covers, including a loose-limbed take on Roky Erickson's "Don't Slander Me." He ventures toward Tom Petty territory on "Too Cool for Love," goes "Honky Tonkin' (In Mississippi)" and throws out a handful of slow-rockin laments. Maybe it's the opening cover of "JuJu Man," but I thought of Rockpile often while listening to "More Like Me"---that is, Rockpile if it had come from the American South. In addition to crafting one of the great roots 'n' roll records of music's dark ages (the '80s) -- 1986's "It Came From Nashville" -- Wilder remains one of rock 'n' roll's cleverest and most enthusiastic proponents. His latest doesn't quite pack the punch of earlier efforts, but he's emerging as a fine, blue-eyed soulster, penning some of the disc's most convincing tracks -- mostly about the downside of love. The bittersweet "Too Cool For Love" and "Come Around" have just the right combination of sentiment and soul, while the mostly acoustic "She's Not Romantic" is a quirky, un-Webb sounding track with an island feel. It's "More Like Me," another original, is Wilder at his best. It's got a herky-jerky, honky-tonky rock groove (with a great Hammond solo) and lyrics that everyone can (and should) relate to ("I want to be more like me... I want to do all the things I'm supposed to do"). And even when the song falls a bit flat -- as on "Honky Tonkin' (in Mississippi)" -- Wilder's vocal style and delivery carry the message. Other highlights are his take on Rocky Erickson's "Don't Slander Me," the jangly, Elvis (Costello)-like closer "Changing Colors" and his take on "Sudden Stop," a gorgeous heartbreaker originally recorded by the great Percy Sledge.
