Subject: Summertime Blues
Yesterday, I had a bit of surgery in my quack doctor's office. When
I awoke from Lake Versed, I heard the radio playing Summertime Blues, by OLIVIA NEWTON JOHN. Though I had died and gone you know where....Which leads us to our poll question.....

Whom did your favorite version of Summer Time Blues?

Olivia Newton John - Ok not really -- didn't know she did that one either.

My favorite will be Webb's version - when he or if he ever records it to an album .... Have you ever played it live WW??

I always liked the old versions - don't even remember the artists that did it ... The Who's was OK but not great.... my least favorite has to be that Alan Jackson guy ... horrible - could be that I just didn't much like him anyway.

You didn't tell us your favorite version Mo...

I like Rush'es version too. The mix on that song sorta captures that
132 db arena sound, but I guess the "Who's Last" live record would win in my book, which is strange cause the production is sorta spotty.

Havent heard Alan Jackson yet. Will have to check that out.

My vote is for the original - Eddie Cochran...unless the guys do it, of course.

Does anyone remember the version that came out in the late 70's or so? a rock band did it, but I didn't think it was Rush that I was thinking of.

Thanks Jo it was Eddie Cochran I couldn't think of it when writing my earlier post .... (I was thinking Duane Eddie - knew that wasn't right) ... the 70's version may be The Who that I referenced before.... not sure if that is the one you are thinking of ...

Mo - don't worry you're lucky if you never hear the Jackson version - tries hard to rock and yet stay country ... kinda like his other crap he put out.... sorry if I offend any Alan Jackson fans.

Well, I hear the date for Webb Fest 2008 was announced at a show last weekend but it has not appeared on the Board yet. Eric or Tater will have the "official" word, but I understand it will be October 11th at the Grey Eagle (?) in Asheville, NC.

I think we'll be back in KC in December. Eddie Cocharan is THE MAN! The Who would be my second choice for that song. First heard it by Blue Cheer who get an A for sheer outrageousness. Alan Jackson....well, beyond any musical criticism, the thing he did that I will NEVER forgive him for: He and the guy who co-wrote it with Eddie Cochran were on TV talkin' about it, gettin' an award or somethin' when it was out and neither one of them ONCE mentioned the great, Eddie Cochran, surely the most overlooked (in this country) of all the early white Rock and Roll icons. I mean Alvin Jackson may not have known what was up with the song but, the guy who CO_WROTE it?!? That just ain't right. Beileve me, this is something the Rock and Roll Justice League should and WILL act on, just as soon as the tribunal can decide how harsh punishment should me. Justice will be served! WW

Doesn't surprise me that Alvin didn't give any credit (probably didn't have a clue who wrote it) but your're right - for the co-writer to dis the Man.... well that's something else.... Webb you need to take back that song in the name of all that was Eddie Cochran.... there I said it.... we'll be looking for it at the next show... hint hint... I'm sure Big Bob Williams can play that one.... Jimmy & Tom can play anything so I guess that settles it... well at least in my mind anyway.

I just discovered this one, by Les Sounders avec Pat Winther, in French. Apparently recorded in 1965. The bass sound is pretty weird. Could be a stand-up bass fiddle miked close?

I heard it on this show. If you don't want to listen to the whole show, it's at about 1:28.

http://www.wfmu.org/playlists/shows/27812

I googled around trying to find out more about Pat Winther, and I found this listing of obscure versions of Summertime Blues on the (always interesting but not always reliable) Ugly Things site. In one of those cosmic convergences, the Sounders' version (with French title) is listed right above a version by none other than Tom & the Cats from Shreveport!

That's pretty far-sided of that Canadian band naming the movie that came out in 1951 after themselves! Of course, with time travel being what it is, it is possible. Klaatu and Gort's favorite version was Eddie Cochran, doing Blue Cheer's version of his original.
