Subject: Music that you don't like . . .
I realize that this question might stir a bit of controversy, but I thought it would make for an interesting discussion. Here goes:

Which music group or genre do you simply not enjoy, even though it is seemingly popular with "everyone else" around you?

Let me explain a bit more, and you will understand why I am asking. Simply put, I really don't like the Mamas and the Papas. Tony bought his mom the "Greatest Hits" or "Essentials" or "Complete Anthology" sort of collection, and as we were all listening to it, my thoughts were that much of the music was creepy and disturbing. Tony says I have a tin ear.

It is a given. We all have our personal likes and dislikes--just opinions and preferences. It shocks Tony that I don't like the Mamas and the Papas. What about you all? Do you shock others when you admit you don't like a certain music group or genre? Who/ what do you NOT like in the area of music? Why?

Disclaimer: This is intended to spark a friendly and interesting discussion, not promote undue criticism and perhaps the proverbial exile from "music society". All opinions are to be respected even if they are not accepted. Thanks. :)

The Mamas and the Papas were really great in a counter culture, pop kind of way. "Monday, Monday" and" California Dreamin'" are great Pop songs with apologies to no one BUT, the group(despite their heady, hedonistic lifestyle) neither held the threat or possessed the edge of real Rock and Roll. If it weren't for their great songs and the sheer musicality of what some MIGHT hear as their "barber shop-ey_ kinda style they really woulda had a shelf date. This came through big time for me watching the out take disc of the now extended "Monterrey Pop Festival" DVD set. They were high, their bond with one another fragile... They were gifted singers. John Phillips was a musical visionary but, he had one foot in the Kingtston Trio and the other one in the "new" clouds. They had a GREAT session kinda man band at Monterrey but, even they didn't seem to REALLY know the songs. Then you see The Who's out takes, then Hendrix's. The M & P's were already history. Anyone can feel good about likin' 'em or NOT, IMHO. I also read John Phillips' book,"Papa John." Puts a lot of his roots in perspective. WW

Even though I enjoy certain kinds of electronically scored music, I hate the techno style called "House Music". I call it music for calculators.

Also, I have never liked the group U2, and I never will.

Good topic. As long as people can keep it civil.

I'm with Fred. I've never liked U2. Other most-hated artists for me that everybody else seems to love include Bruce Springsteen and the Grateful Dead (and pretty much all other jam bands---I can appreciate the talent, but hate the music).

My hatred for U2 predates Bono's emergence as king of the world; I hate his voice, and I can't understand how U2 got to be as big as they are.

Bruce Springsteen sounds constipated when he sings.

But of course, one of my favorite groups is KISS, so what do I know?

I would say "country" but as I've aged I've come to realize that I can tolerate some "real country" country ... much of this newer-fangled "country" (or "pop music with a fiddle," as my son calls it) still makes me gag (gee, I hope my wife doesn't read this) ... I can count the rap songs I like on one hand (the good one, with 5 fingers) ... like Tater, I give most everything a chance (this a product of listening to my father's classical and Perry Como/Andy Williams-type records as I grew up) ... but LOL, as a fellow KISS fan (the old stuff, at least), I have to echo Hunter's "what do I know?" caveat ... and on that note, the disco channel is one of my XM pre-sets, so top THAT one ... :-)

My appreciation of The Mamas and The Papas came from when I was little. My Mom, even though she was never a hippie or whatever, liked them and played their records on her huge stereo. I learned to pull up and stand beside that stereo and even cut my teeth on the edge of it. It still has the little bite marks on the edge. I guess the wood it was made of was tasty. HA! She also played Glenn Miller, the Beach Boys, the Beatles, and Ray Stevens' "Misty" album. I guess that is where I got my diverse love of music.

I am with a few of you all on U2. Never got it, never will. I got my taste of U2 HELL a couple of years ago at an airshow at NAS Oceana in Virginia Beach. They were playing music over the PA prior to the show starting. They must have played the U2 CD with that song "Vertigo" about 10 times. We actually grabbed the PA speaker in front of us, leaned it over, and unplugged it.

I hate rap. It is not musical. If you can't play it on musical instruments, it ain't music to me. Not a big fan of R&B either. Most artists there sound like they are in pain.

I am a diehard bluegrass fan and I like bluegrass gospel, but I despise Contemporary Christian music. I believe there are only 12 songs in that genre and all their artists sing them over and over and over. I probably just bought a one way ticket to everlasting torment when I die, but I can't help it.

Yesterday one of my students asked me if I like saliva. I told her that it is OK, because it helps in the breakdown and digestion of my food. Come to find out there is a group called Saliva. I heard some of the music, and it just sounded like Nickelback or somebody like that--maybe what could be described as the brooding garage band sound, canned and bland. I am now adding Saliva to my list (the other saliva is good as long as it isn't in the form of drool). For good measure, I am adding what I am calling "nouveau folk", the bastard child of "flowers and moonbeams" and good, old-fashioned bluegrass. Wow. It felt so good to say that. I am glad I started this thread.

It would actually be easier to list the music I do like....

I was thinking about this just the other day: why do we like what we like? Why are there certain bands or artists whose music just speaks to us more than others'? For most of the bands that I love, it started with the first time I heard them. It wasn't a matter of learning to like it or letting it grow on me. The first time I heard Webb Wilder, I knew that the music was mine. The first time I heard Jackyl, I knew I'd like the rest of their music.

Buy why? I have no idea. Why do I love Jackyl and Rhino Bucket, but have no interest in BuckCherry, even though all three of them sound similar to AC/DC, which I also love.

Why can one song do it for me and nothing else by that particular artist will?

I find that fascinating.

Hunter, those are good observations. I don't have any answers, but I agree that it's interesting to ponder. Occassionally, I like some music that's bazarre and unusual, or foreign, or way out of the mainstream, but I have no idea why either. Maybe we should volunteer for some pschyc student's college research project and get figured out.

Oh, boy! This is a subject that has gotten me in trouble more than once. My friends are pretty cool about it - though they give me crap about my dislikes. It's other people who don't know me well that give me grief about it. I have a pretty wide range of genres that I do like, but.....

Music I Don't Like: Springsteen, Madonna, U2, Beatles, REM, most of the Beach Boys (a few exceptions), Elton John, Faith Hill or her hubby, most of ZZ Top, Black Sabbath or Ozzy Osborne, Sarah MacLaughlin, Allman Brothers, Jefferson Airplane/Starship, Kid Rock - among others I will think of after I post this.

I especially detest: Latino, rap, new age, opera, and regardless of genre - anything that gets way too much air time & anything that whines: about love lost, love not returned, dog died, drinking or drugs, lousy boss, jelousy, gambling, etc. Get a life! No one has a charmed, perfect world. I try not to dwell on it in my life & I don't want to hear anyone else complain about their problems. Instead sing about getting even.... that would work for me.

Most people have dreams that are like a movie. My dreams consist of music. If I like the song I consider it a good dream. If (like last night) I get stuck with something else (like the Dirty Dancing or Grease soundtracks) that is a nightmare!

Tommy Lee & I once had a conversation somewhat about this topic. I told him then "I may not know how to define what I like or don't like in music, but what I like, I like a lot, what I don't like I dislike intensely. There is not a lot of middle ground."

Thanks, Susan, for letting me know I am NOT the only one.

I'm pretty open minded about music, although I'm just too old for rap.
The worst music for me is any halfway decent song that gets used in a TV commercial. Man, that's painful. The first time you hear it-something like Zep's Rock & Roll or that Mellencamp song in the truck ads-you go "Cool! Good song." Then you hear it again 10 minutes later. Then they play the same commercial 20 times during one Cardinals game and I realize it's going to be a loooong baseball season. I start changing the channel or hitting the mute botton when it comes on. Finally, a year later, the commercial goes off the air but by then I hate the song so much I wish it was never written.

Good grief... the list would be longer then my "Music I like list" ... if I had to name Artists or Bands in particular.

I mostly agree with Frank... almost way too much (kinda scary actually...lol) Pop music with a fiddle.... tell your boy that is CLASSIC. Interesting - couple of good ole East Tennessee boys.... don't like country.

If I had to add one to the list though... I really just can't get into Bluegrass (sorry Tony...really).... I mean I could go to a Bluegrass show - and I have - but I could go, sit next to Tony and listen and not really complain... but then leave and have no real desire to listen again or buy a CD, turn the radio station... you know what I mean... What is even weirder is that I love to hear the Mandolin played.... Like Hunter says - its strange how that works.

Also, as a Van Halen fan ... the worst thing in the world I can hear is.... any song called VH that has Sammy Hagar singing, I just cringe, say that's not VH and turn the station ... I would rather listen to bluegrass.

Moving on to what I definitely don't like-

Barry, Barbra, sometimes Bette -- that whole genre really
Rap - just don't get it
Madonna- Madge has made her mark and needs to move on,maybe take care of her kids instead of trying to prove that she's still got it
Enya or the Celtic stuff - unless I'm trying to go to sleep and even then it may annoy me to the point I could not rest.

As the astute may have noticed, my tastes are pretty wide-ranging, to the extent that I have been accused of having no taste at all. I'm not much on rap, but I do like Snoop and Dr. Dre and Eminem, and also some of that melodic stuff like the Fugees. I'm OK with speed metal up to about Pantera, but anything beyond Pantera starts to lose me. These are generational things, I guess, as I am an old fart.

I don't care much for anything Yes did after the "Fragile" album, although Chris Squire was always a hell of a bass player.

Just about anything that is on the pop, country or urban top 40 these days probably won't float my boat. In keeping with what Eric or somebody said, I was listening to Bill Anderson's show on XM the other day, and he quoted somebody as talking about current "mainstream" country music and saying something like, "That stuff ain't country music. It's just bad rock music."

I never got "new age" music. I once dated a woman who loved that stuff, but at least she had a sense of humor about it. She said of herself, "I have over 500 CDs, and they all sound exactly the same."

I love hearing bluegrass live, but recorded bluegrass doesn't thrill me, with a few exceptions.

Anyway, I'm a guy with a sunny disposition, and I'd rather think about what I like than what I don't like.

My last name is Davidson and most days people will find me teaching English to high school students in a county school in Southwest Virginia. In addition to force-feeding them world literature and the finer points of writing research papers, I encourage them to express their opinions in a tactful manner and listen to the viewpoints of others in only the most respectful way. I tell them that they don't have to agree with anyone else--including me--but if they do disagree with someone, they can certainly do so with some class and some diplomacy.

I started the "Music that you don't like thread", because I knew that there had to be others who feel as I do (not necessarily about the Mamas and the Papas specifically, though). I have followed this thread--and the four or five others that have spun off from it--faithfully, and at no point have I ever read a post that is mean and overly critical of any individual singer or group. Here on the Webb Board, everyone is generally receptive to and respectful toward the opinions of those who post. The only time there is ever a wrinkle in the system is when there is a post that seems to come out of left field. Ironically, MotherBear, you have been responsible for a couple of those. And in cases such as those, it isn't about one's expressing his or her opinion; it is about trying to figure out the motivation behind it.

I looked at the Member Roster, and while it is true that very few people have added their actual names to the list, it doesn't mean that someone is "hiding". Consider these possible reasons:
1. Privacy. Put your full name on the 'net for all the world to see, and privacy could just possibly sail right out the window.
2. The "unidentified" member or guest doesn't even know that a Member Roster exists. When omatic created the Member Roster, he told us about it. Maybe somebody didn't get the memo.
3. The "unidentified" member or guest received said memo, but he or she either forgot all about the existence of the Member Roster or just simply doesn't know how to get to it or how to add his or her actual name to it.
4. Protection (my personal favorite). Many folks on here could have been absorbed into the Witness Protection Program and cannot afford to post an actual name. People in the WPP give up a lot, but they don't sacrifice their opinions. I would like to think that if I ever had to be entered into the WPP, I could still log on and post to the Webb Board without revealing my identity and whereabouts to the person who was trying to do me in. I could have a really cool nickname like "You Can Look But You'll Never Find Me". or "Cherry Blossoms in the Spring". Who knows? Well, actually no one would. That's the point.

In all seriousness, when Board members are not singing the praises of Webb Wilder and the Beatnecks, they are sharing their opinions and ideas regarding music and music makers or life in general, with or without revealing their full identity, and that's OK.

I just have one question before I go. On the Member Roster, a few have revealed their actual names; some have revealed their first names only. That gives everyone some idea who the other Board members are. But how much does one really reveal about his or her true identity when all that person lists is a shortened first name and the first letter of the last name only?

Hey Snake,

I am with you about live music. Hearing Webb (that is of the WILDER variety MotherBear if you don't know who I am talking about) for the first time LIVE, instead of on a recording, really won me over to him. I think every album should be recorded live, because it shows what an artist is really made of. I love live recordings that are mixed well. Bluegrass to me has become stale in the last couple of years. I have been a life long fan of it, but nothing has caught my ear in the past couple of years. Maybe the reason is that in the last two years or so, I have only been to one bluegrass show and 14 (I think) Webb Wilder shows. Webb never gets old to me now. Whodathunkit?

To help MotherBear (whomever that is) get to know me better. My last name is King (spelled the same as Elvis' title, 'cept different). Most days I will be found on a major railroad, hauling fossil fuel to the southland, putting a lot of diesel smoke in the air, doing my part to add to global warming and the total destruction of the good ole Mother Earth.

I love it when my gal gets on her soap box. She really stretches Webster and Roget for all they are worth!!

HEY MOTHERBEAR!!!! WHOOOOOO ARE YOU? WHO WHO, WHO WHO???

In reading some of these posts, I realize I hate a lot more music than I thought I hated.

Mother Bear-
I post under movax0 for a three very good reasons.

1. My real name might be Richard Gooberman
2. I am a double naught spy.
3. You never asked.

Wait a minute! Mother Bear. Even though I am a man,and subtle hints really dont register much, I have come to the realization that you are mad at me (My wife told me after deciphering the posts). I apologize. Please understand that anything I may have said about red and blue pills, etc were not directed at you maliciously, but purely in the fun/family spirit that comprises the Webb board. I am sorry. Please accept my heartfelt apology. You may slap me at the next Webb show we both attend. And really, I did not know you were into folk music. Its really cool! So once again I am sorry. (Im not apologizing for dissing Barry M., as I will only grovel so much) (You arent him by chance are you? If so that Copa thing WAS kind of catchy....)

Did I mention Im sorry?

genre: Rap/Hip Hop (How in the hell did Houston become the HH capital of America?) and most everything Country. I won't go into specific bands, opinionated? me?? And don't get me started on U2 and Bozo. I will never forgive that man! From that time period (actually at that exact time) I far more enjoyed The Alarm and still do.

Now since I've mentioned The Alarm...I'm doing something in October that I'm not sure is cool to advertise here. Would you good people please visit my myspace page and read my current blog? www.myspace.com/everyonelovesnese Thanks

movaxO, Thanks for responding. Your wife is pretty keen on those things. We're cool. Do you find yourself sometimes stirring up the pot with your comments? FYI, I thought the Barry M. thing was highly amusing and the double naught spy episode of the BH's is one of my favorites. Expecially when Granny discovers the ejector seat. Irene Ryan is one of my all time favorites. I'm ready for some Spring Tonic.

Okay, I don't like Jimi Hendrix or The Who, to name just a couple.

As far as genres go, I don't like rap, and there is very little country music I can listen to-it always makes me feel like drinking a case of beer and shooting myself, and since I don't drink and I don't have a gun. . .
