Article about Webb on Jambands.com [February 27th, 2008]...

Article about Webb on Jambands.com [February 27th, 2008]...
Jambands.com has posted an article about Webb's recent sit-in with Atlanta favorites Delta Moon, which took place after his own gig at Smith's Olde Bar last week. Webb Wilder Shares ?Sugar Coated Love? With Delta Moon

Nashville-based star of stage and screen Webb Wilder made the rounds in Atlanta this past Saturday night. Wilder started the evening with a rollicking performance at Smith?s Olde Bar. He featured many songs from his 2008 live release Born to Be Wilder (which currently sits alone atop the Roots Charts) like ?Tough It Out,? ?You Might Be Lonely for a Reason,? and the classic, ?Human Cannonball.? Longtime Wilder side man George Bradfute sat in with the band when current Wilder bassist Tom Comet missed the show due to a family illness. Bradfute, the ?Tone Chaperone,? is a multi-instrumentalist and has been a part of many previous WW outfits, handled the bass duties on this evening. The Wilder loyalists, some of whom had that traveled a very long way, also reveled in the healthy sampling of rarities, which included ?TCB Yodel #9? from Wilder?s silver screen ?Corn Flick,? Horror Hayride (featuring the lyrics, ?if you don?t think Elvis was number 1, then you?re full of number 2?) ? and the second-ever public performance of ?Everyday I Kick Myself? from his 1991 release, DooDad.

Then Wilder made his way over to over to Highland Avenue to bathe in the incisive twin-guitar-driven music of Atlanta fixtures, Delta Moon who were performing to a sold out crowd at Blind Willie's. Wilder enjoyed the band amidst the crowd for a while. However, after tearing through ?Stranger in My Hometown,? from last year?s Clear Blue Flame release, Delta Moon invited Wilder for a swamp-drenched, explosive and surprisingly seamless three-guitar attack. Wilder and The Moon?s Tom Gray and Mark Johnson locked in during Chuck Berry?s ?Let It Rock.? They honored Atlanta native blues legend Big Maceo Merriweather with a version of his ?Worried Life Blues? and then wrapped up the impromptu crosspollination with ?Sugar Coated Love? from the pen of Louisiana ?s Leslie ?Lazy Lester? Johnson.

Delta Moon and Webb Wilder each have gigs coming up at the Bamboo Room in Lake Worth, Florida. Delta Moon will perform there on March 8 and Webb Wilder March 13. Each will also be seen at festivals across the country this summer. Delta Moon will start their festival season with a performance at Atlanta?s 72nd annual Dogwood Festival on April 4 and you can catch Webb Wilder when he co-headlines with Pure Prairie League at the unique Chicken and Egg Festival in Moulton, AL on April 12. It should be noted that veteran blues harpist Lazy Lester continues to tour. He is currently on the road with Mark Hummel?s Harmonica Blowout, which will begin a six night stand at Paris? Le Meridian Etiole on March 11. The original article is located here.UPDATE: Photos taken from this guest jam are now available on our Fan Photos gallery!

Wilder Kin to Receive Blues Trail Marker [November 13th, 2007]...

Wilder Kin to Receive Blues Trail Marker [November 13th, 2007]...
This coming Saturday, November 17th, a historical marker will be placed on Farish Street in Jackson Mississippi, along the Mississippi Blues Trail, to commemorate the site of The Record Mart. The Record Mart was owned by Webb's Aunt and Uncle, Lillian and Willard McMurry, founders of Trumpet Records.

Of the event, Webb said: As you may know, my aunt and uncle, Lillian and Willard McMurry owned and operated the now legendary Trumpet Records of Jackson, Mississippi in the early fifties. They recorded and released records on Elmore James, Sonny Boy Williamson, Willie Love and the Three Aces, Big Joe Williams, Luther Huff, Jimmy Swan, The Southern Sons and many others. They are both in the Mississippi Music Hall of Fame. Their legacy is not only one of artistic and entrepreneurial innovation. They are remembered for their fair dealing and warm relationships with the artists both black and white, gospel and secular. This was at a time when many similar labels were known to be cold, opportunistic and exploitative. Much of the great Trumpet canon can be found in the catalog of Alligator Records owned by Bruce Iglauer, a great admirer of Lillian, Willard and Trumpet. There is also a book on the label and it's history by Marc Ryan.Jerry "Boogie" McCain will be there as well as family members and state officials. This is a historic occasion and a huge honor for Trumpet's memory and a testament to their lasting contribution to the blues! Other recently added blues markers include one in McComb to honor Bo Diddley.

Organist Carson Whitsett Passes On [June 21st, 2007]...

Organist Carson Whitsett Passes On [June 21st, 2007]...We've gotten belated word that Keyboardist Carson Whitsett passed on this spring. Webb offers these comments: It is with sadness that I relate the news of the passing of Carson Whitsett who my fans will remember as the organist on "Ruff Rider" from "It Came From Nashville," although that was one of the least of his many accomplishments. I first met him in Jackson, MS many years ago when I was playing with the Drapes. He impressed me then and always as an extremely personable, professional and talented individual who was always a perfect gentleman, very natural and unpretentious. We have included some of what The Tennessean had to say about Carson in his obituary which ran at the time of his death. It was an honor and a privilege to know and work with him.
Here is the obituary to which Webb refers:

Carson WHITSETT - May 8, 2007

Died Tuesday, May 8, 2007 at home in Nashville, after a spirited 16-month bout with brain cancer. Born May 1, 1945, Carson was a gifted musician, composer, arranger and producer, who was recognized as a virtuoso on the B-3 organ. In the 1970's, he was a session musician for Stax Records and Malaco Records, and a member of noted instrumental group, The MGs. A versatile keyboardist, he recorded with artists including, Dorothy Moore, Bobby Blue Bland, B.B. King, Paul Simon, Paul Davis, Connie Francis, Kathy Mattea and Tony Joe White, and many others. He also scored several movies and co-produced "Together We are Beautiful," a number one hit in Britain. As a songwriter, some of his many recordings include "Dear Me" for Lorrie Morgan, "Mississippi Moon" for John Anderson, "Don't Give Up On Me" for Solomon Burke and Joe Cocker, and Fred Knobloch's "Why Not Me." As Kathy Mattea's keyboardist for several years, Carson played with full symphony orchestras and toured Europe, as he had previously done with Tony Joe White and various Malaco artists. Carson continued composing and recording until the last months of his illness. In his final weeks, his renowned wit entertained a continuous line of well wishers. McGuire presiding. In lieu of flowers, Carson requested donations to Musicares, 1904 Wedgewood Ave., Nashville, TN 37212 or Alive Hospice, 1718 Patterson St., Nashville, TN 37203.
More about Carson's life and achievements can be read at Wikipedia.

Ian Wallace Passes Away [February 23rd, 2007]...

Ian Wallace Passes Away [February 23rd, 2007]...We've gotten word that Ian Wallace, a friend of Webb's and a drummer with whom he's shared the stage, has passed away in Los Angeles of complications arising from esophageal cancer.

Wallace was a multi-talented brit who really got around, having played with groups over the years such as Jackson Browne, Don Henley, Bonnie Raitt, King Crimson, Steve Marriott's All Stars, Johnny Hallyday, Lonnie Mack, Bob Dylan ("Street Legal"), Billy Burnette, T. Graham Brown and a pre-YES John Anderson in their band, the Warriors. There were many others as well, including at least one track with the Traveling Wilburys.

Webb adds these comments:He knew more jokes than anyone I've ever met. We got him to do some stand up in between sets at The Down Home in Johnson City one time. He played in a band in LA with Ian MacLagan called Cry On Cue. He and Mac called themselves,"The Two Ians Club." Mac has (had?) a joke page on his website (macspages.com). Most, if not all of them, came from Ian Wallace. He will be missed. You can read more about Ian at Wikipedia or his personal website.
The Tennessean has also published a story about Ian's life and death.

"?" Loses Belongings in Fire [January 17th, 2007]...Sad news for legendary garage rock frontman "?" of "? and the Mysterians," who has lost all his possessions in a house fire. The Mysterians first formed in 1962, and are best known for the classic rock tune "96 Tears."

"?," also thought to be born named either Rudy Martinez or Reeto Rodriquez, had been residing with his manager and manager's wife for many years, while also continuing to perform live and make recordings. Their Clio, MI home burned last Tuesday, and all that was saved was three of the seven Yorkshire Terriers they'd raised. Unfortunately these folks are reported to have had no insurance coverage for the fire.

If you would like to help the band out, donations can be sent to:? and the Mysterians

"American Music" Legend Buck Owens Dies [March 25th, 2006]...

"American Music" Legend Buck Owens Dies [March 25th, 2006]...Recording artist and innovator Buck Owens died this week. Webb comments:Buck Owens was HUGE. For people who did not know of him before Hee Haw, he probably seemed goofy but, he and his band, The Buckaroos, with Don Rich on guitar, were so important with their twin Telecaster approach, their distinctive close harmony vocals and their sharp Nudie suit and sparkle finish guitar visuals.

Perhaps even more important were the songs especially, "(I've Got A) Tiger By The Tail," a huge cross over smash in the sixties penned by "Mr. Songwriter," Harlan Howard. Buck Owens and the Buckaroos were the Country Beatles.Stories about Buck's passing are available all over the web. Here's one such story at CNN's website.

Live Webb Wilder performance available online [February 21st, 2005]...

Live Webb Wilder performance available online [February 21st, 2005]...
Leading up the release of Webb's new album, About Time, Webb and the Nashvegans made an appearance on the Woodsongs Old-Time Radio Hour TV/Radio/Internet program, which will be airing in a few weeks. This taping was webcast live, and is now available for your viewing pleasure! You can access it by surfing to the WoodSongs Performance Archive. Webb's taping is show number 343.

Lots of intra-song interviewing is included in the show, plus some interesting insights into the production of a syndicated program. For example, like the periods before-during-and-after when they take care of business (like taping promo spots for broadcast the week prior to show airing). Amazing Canadian acoustical guitarist Don Ross is also featured on the show.

Note: Unfortunately, this one's not really doable on dial-up. The .WMV file of the performance is over 140MB. Sorry!

Fresh Nashville Scene Ink [September 16th, 2004]...

Fresh Nashville Scene Ink [September 16th, 2004]...Webb recently got another mention in this Nashville staple, and we quote:WEBB WILDER Even in a music scene as wide-open and aggressively weird (in its way) as '80s Nashville, the emergence of Webb Wilder gave the city one of its oddest and most entertaining bandleaders. Two decades on, the self-described "Last of the Full-Grown Men" continues to amuse longtime fans and catch newcomers off-guard with his inspired stage shtick and his band's fiery, concise roots rock. But this week he's got a new reason to celebrate: the reissue of his 1987 cult classic, It Came From Nashville, in a massive 26-track CD package that includes a heaping helping of live tracks and B-sides. The album is a reminder of Wilder's singular talent as a brawny vocalist and entertainer, the cleverness of the songs he co-wrote with producer and co-conspirator R.S. Field, and the explosiveness of the core Beatneck combo of guitarist Donny Roberts, drummer Jimmy Lester and bassist Denny Blakely. The live portions of It Came From Nashville capture Wilder's hilariously off-kilter '80s routines, including his indelible credo , "Work hard, rock hard, eat hard, sleep hard, grow big, wear glasses if you need 'em", and an extended explanation of "Who Is Webb Wilder?" Though band members have long ago changed and Wilder doesn't pontificate as much as he once did, the singer and his trio still distill surf music, rockabilly, Texas blues and voodoo swamp-rock into punchy, guitar-driven arrangements.

Webb Gets Entertainment Weekly Ink [April 27th, 2004]...Webb got a very cool mention this week in Entertainment Weekly. Horror magnate Stephen King says talks about X-Country (Webb's XM satellite radio channel) in his column. King writes, "I've found the place where rock & roll has gone to have its final party," and throws out a lot of positives about Webb's home on the skywaves. We've obtained permission to reprint the article here on the site. Here it is, in .PDF format. You'll need the free Adobe Acrobat Reader, which you can download here, if you don't have it already.

Video Notes [January 14th, 2003]...
For those of you who saw Webb pop up in the Martina McBride video When God Fearin' Women Get The Blues, keep your eyes peeled for Webb in one of Alan Jackson's latest shoots, That'd Be Alright. Both videos were directed by Stephen Goldman, whose company, The Collective, seems to have a lot of hot properties in Music City these days!
