I have to admit, the allegations over the last few years have been troubling and in many ways overshadowed his musical talents. It's unfortunate. I'm with Frank on this one. I grew up knowing very well who Ed McMahon was. When I heard the news of his death, I felt sad. I grew up knowing who Farrah Fawcett was. When I heard the news of her death, I felt sad. When I found out that Michael Jackson had died, I felt really sad and I cried. Nope, I didn't sob and feel as if the world might come crashing down on me, but I did shed a few tears from the sadness. In fact, I am still not quite used to the idea that he is gone. I wasn't obsessed with him (as my students say I am regarding WW&BTNX), but when I was a teenager (throughout most of the 80s), I of course heard a lot of Michael Jackson's music. I remember watching his videos on Friday Night Videos and seeing him on MTV when I was at a friend's house, because we didn't have cable at mine. I truly love and appreciate the pop/ rock music of my teen years, and whenever I hear any of those songs, I am immediately taken back to that particular time. It's such a good feeling. Michael Jackson's music from that decade is just as effective in its ability to take me back as any other of that time, I don't want to get into the speculation regarding whether he interacted inappropriately with children. That isn't what this is about. Michael Jackson had a gift for entertaining. He was creative and charismatic. No one can deny him that. No, I didn't know him, of course, but boy am I going to miss him. After that the wierdness kicked in and after 30-40 plastic surgeries and all the other legal issues ... it was easy to dislike him ... but his contribution to music will remain. That happened on Saturday. Apparently, I slept for 14 hours. It's already five days later, and I have yet to write about two great shows I saw before my big sleep. Webb Wilder was holding musical court at the Coffee Pot. Here's a situation where Wilder, "the last of the boarding house men," and the Pot, the old roadhouse that's on the National Register of Historic Places but still maintains a dive-ish charm, are a perfect fit. If Wilder's doing anything, he's doing roadhouse-ready music. His latest album, "More Like Me," is one of the best he's ever recorded, and it was well-represented. Wilder's own songs -- this is his most prolific work to date -- "Too Cool For Love" and "She's Not Romantic," were laid back but cool. Wilder and his band powered through some of the disc's covers. "Don't Slander Me" (Roky Erikson) was psychedelic, with Wilder screaming notes well past the top of his baritone. It's great to hear that he can still get it vocally, even after all these decades of touring and recording. Longtime Wilder bandmates Jimmy Lester (drums/harmony vocals) and Tom Comet (bass/harmonies) were their usual solid but sly selves. Wilder has a rotation of guitarists, based on who is playing with whom and when at a given time. On Friday, Bob Williams was onstage, and I'd swear he is as good or better than anyone I've heard with Wilder, save maybe original Beatnecks guitarist Donnie "The Twangler" Roberts. Williams has obviously listened to his fair share of David Grisson and Sonny Landreth. The Landreth connection shows up more in his single-note picking than his slide work, a sentence which adds up to one word -- hard but atmospheric. Wilder always improves as a guitarist -- always with the tasty and slashing rhythms to complement his lead player, and often with a few neat solos of his own. Where both he and Williams really excel, though, is as a pair of tone farmers. From vibratos set to sound like spinning speaker cabinets to an overdriven crunch strong enough to give AC/DC a run for its money, these cats can make their axes sound hot. Honestly, Wilder and his band rock as hard as they ever did. He's aged well, and he realizes his crowd has aged, too, so his shows are happening earlier. This one started before 9 p.m. I hope that on future dates, more kids will come out to see how it's done -- then head out to later shows. We saw Webb & crew at Awendaw, SC at the Sea Turtle Relief Benefit concert near Charleston, SC last night. Four groups were on the bill, including Jeff Norwood (straight blues), the Whisperjets (local high school guys), Holy Ghoast (sic) Tent Revival (sort of ska, with a banjo!), and Webb and the Beatnecks. It was hot enough to melt lead yesterday; the readout in our car was indicating 100 degrees F as we were driving up at 4:30 PM. The venue is interesting- "Awendaw Green"- basically it's the big side yard of a nice old two story house set back in the woods near the SC coast. There's pond and a few barns; the bands were set up at the back of the area on a stage under a tent. It looks like a good place for this kind of event (weather permitting!). Music started around 5:30 PM and kicked off with Jeff Norwood, who I really enjoyed. The Whisperjets and Holy Ghoast Tent Revival were good and I enjoyed them, but they weren't exactly my cup of tea. A big cloudburst hit around 8 o'clock. A lot of people got wet but most were glad for the relief from the heat. I got to talk to Tom Comet for a minute at the T-shirt tent before they went on. He was a very personable guy and it was nice to meet him. We picked up some good Webb swag last night including a copy of the new CD, a copy of B Flicks, a couple of new T-shirts and some other stuff. Webb came on around 8:30 PM. The sound out front was good (it had improved as the night went on) but the mix on stage was evidently pretty bad as Webb complained a couple of times. No matter- it all sounded great and the vocals were amazing as usual. Songs were a mix of previous stuff and stuff off the new album, some of which I hadn't heard. About 9:30 PM, the proprietor announced (for the 2nd time IIRC) that there was a tornado warning for the area; after that Webb broke into an impromptu blues improvisation about the weather. As he said "it just came on me." :-) It drizzled a few times during the Beatnecks' set but fortunately we missed any really bad weather. My guess is 90% of the crowd had never heard Webb Wilder but I think he made more than a few new fans last night. There were plenty of drunk dancing chicks out front, which I guess is a good sign. Unfortunately they had a mandatory 10 PM cut off time to prevent offending the neighbors, so there was no chance of an encore last night. It was my third time seeing Webb and the boys live, and they never fail to please. I believe Rick Kurtz was on lead guitar last night and Marshall Richardson (young guy) were on drums. Both were great and did an awesome job. Tom's bass and backing vocals were on the money, and Webb, hell, Webb was WEBB!!! Thanks again guys- hope to see you back in the Charleston area soon! I am saddened to learn of Tim's passing. Not long out of the hospital from a very serious and involved surgery Tim came to our show in Louisville a few weeks ago. It was great to see him and now it means even more. Tim was very important to my musical journey. I first heard him and his band around 1980 in Mississippi. When I moved to Nashville in 1982, I knew three people: Dan and Adele Tyler and Tim Krekel. By this time he had formed Tim Krekel and the Sluggers with Willis Bailey and Tom Comet. This is how I met Tom. They were my favorite band in Nashville and I used to go hear them all the time. Later they would be managed by Praxis International along with Jason and the Scorchers, The Georgia Satellites, the Questionaires, Webb Wilder and the Beatnecks and at one time or another many more including Steve Forbert and John Hiatt.. Tim always played a Guild Starfire VI guitar. I got the bug from him in '79 or '80 and played a Starfire V almost exclusively for several years. At one time or another Tim was lead guitarist for Jimmy Buffet and Billy Swan. He wrote songs that were hits by Crystal Gayle, Patty Loveless and Martina McBride among others. He moved back to his native Louisville at some point but, came back to Nashville frequently to write and perform. He played with his band up there as well as solo. I think he wrote "Greetings From Nashville." I know he and Jason and the Scorchers both recorded it. He was an artist, a singer, a songwriter and a helluva guitarist. Hate to lose him. Here's a situation where Wilder, "the last of the boarding house men," and the Pot, the old roadhouse that's on the National Register of Historic Places but still maintains a dive-ish charm, are a perfect fit. If Wilder's doing anything, he's doing roadhouse-ready music. His latest album, "More Like Me," is one of the best he's ever recorded, and it was well-represented. Wilder's own songs -- this is his most prolific work to date -- "Too Cool For Love" and "She's Not Romantic," were laid back but cool. Wilder and his band powered through some of the disc's covers. "Don't Slander Me" (Roky Erikson) was psychedelic, with Wilder screaming notes well past the top of his baritone. It's great to hear that he can still get it vocally, even after all these decades of touring and recording. Longtime Wilder bandmates Jimmy Lester (drums/harmony vocals) and Tom Comet (bass/harmonies) were their usual solid but sly selves. Wilder has a rotation of guitarists, based on who is playing with whom and when at a given time. On Friday, Bob Williams was onstage, and I'd swear he is as good or better than anyone I've heard with Wilder, save maybe original Beatnecks guitarist Donnie "The Twangler" Roberts. Williams has obviously listened to his fair share of David Grisson and Sonny Landreth. The Landreth connection shows up more in his single-note picking than his slide work, a sentence which adds up to one word -- hard but atmospheric. Wilder always improves as a guitarist -- always with the tasty and slashing rhythms to complement his lead player, and often with a few neat solos of his own. Where both he and Williams really excel, though, is as a pair of tone farmers. From vibratos set to sound like spinning speaker cabinets to an overdriven crunch strong enough to give AC/DC a run for its money, these cats can make their axes sound hot. Honestly, Wilder and his band rock as hard as they ever did. He's aged well, and he realizes his crowd has aged, too, so his shows are happening earlier. This one started before 9 p.m. I hope that on future dates, more kids will come out to see how it's done -- then head out to later shows. It appears that no one else is going to post anything about the second Webb Wilder gig of the weekend which was at the Capital Ale House in Richmond. Dolly and I arrived after a short 3.5 hour ride and it was hot by the time we arrived. The lady at the front desk at the Holiday Inn said that from the looks of us, we could probably use an upgrade in rooms. She gave us a Suite at no extra charge. We ate at the Capital Ale House and then saw the show at their little concert hall next door to the bar. The entire establishment is a very classy place. All evening I tried to think of a brand of beer they did not have so I could try to order one. But, they seemed to have several hundred brands of beer on hand, so I drank whiskey sours. The band played two sets that night. The set-list was very similar to Friday nigth but they did add "Down On the Farm". I'd also like to thank Webb for his Frank Zappa tribute he did between songs. He did a little rendition of "What's the Ugliest Part of Your Body". Last time I heard that song was in Kent, Ohio when Frank sang it! The crowd was very thrilled by the music and there was a lot of dancing going on. Over all, this was an excellent set of shows. The band was very tight and energetic for all three shows. I'd like to personally thank Webb, Jimmy, Tom Comet (who Rules!) and Bob for, once again plotting out a three-day road trip that just happens to coincide with mine and Dolly's anniversary weekend. I can't think of too many better ways to celebrate. We enjoyed the music, the friendship and the hosptality of all involved. It turned out we had registered at the same hotel as Susan. When last I saw her that night, she was attempting to park a 9 foot wide car into a 7.5 foot wide parking place and I do believe she did it! I thought the vocals were a bit low in the mix, too. I was standing at the back of the room and thought that might have something to do with it. I stood next to the sound board and it was better there, but I thought the vocals could have still been a bit louder. While Webb was asking for a little more bottom on the vocals in his monitor mix, out front it could have used a little less bottom and a bit more overall volume. But that didn't prevent it from being a really great performance. Really liked the mix of old and new tunes. Very cool covering Roky Erickson and Charlie Rich. I remember reading an interview with Sam Phillips were he mentioned that of all the musicians he had worked with, the two most talented were Howlin' Wolf and Charlie Rich. I didn't know they had played in Alexandria earlier that afternoon. We had gone to Alexandria before going to the Iota and saw that there was a festival going on but had no idea that Webb and the band were performing. Webb - A few details on "Jack". It's a copy of an Electro-Harmonix LPB-1. My brother has a couple of them from the first year of production and I copied the circuit from them. The main difference is that the LPB-1 uses the "mystery" transistor FS36999. Jack uses a NTE123AP, which was listed as a replacement for the FS36999 in one of the data books that we have here at Gasbag Central (check www.tcomlp.com and pick "Gallery"). The other differences are the LEDs, which have no effect on the signal, and the turret board construction, which might be inducing some stray capacitances. And those are "Just the facts." They are such gracious hosts, and the food was fantastic. Buffy, Dylan (spelling?), and the cat were sweet little creatures. I think I want a Min Pin now. I think that the cats Snort, Pepper, and Mollie Jane would love a dog. Bill and Louise have a beautiful home. It was nice to see everyone. A fellow named Robert had come in during the break, stood around for a bit, and then asked if he could have the extra chair at the table where Alex and I were sitting. We started talking, and he told me the only thing that he knew about the band was that they'd had a song on the radio at one time: Human Cannonball. Oh, boy. The poor fellow needed to be educated a bit, so I took it upon myself to fill him in on a few details about WW&BTNX. He asked me if I was local, and when I told him I had driven from Bristol, Virginia, he was surprised. He was even more surprised that a couple of folks had come up from Kingsport, and three had even ridden motorcycles from Ohio to see Webb at The Coffee Pot. He realized that Webb and the guys have quite the dedicated following of people willing to travel far and wide for a show. Robert was an incredibly nice guy, and he loved the music. He commented that the guys looked as if they were having fun up there onstage. I told him that they always do. At the end of the show, Robert told me that he'd be checking out this website and that I would be seeing him again at other Webb shows. New recruits are always good. Webb, you never cease to amaze. I'm as awestruck as I was from the first show I ever saw. Jimmy, you are a force to be reckoned with. Tom, YOU ROCK (but I am sure that you have heard that many times before)! And, Bob, your very presence is a gift to the music world. A pox upon Tony for choosing steam engines over you guys! Susan P.S. Slade were absolutly huge in the UK in the early 70's. They only faded (In commercial terms) when thay tried to 'Crack' America. This meant they toured heavily and their british Fan Base moved on. They had a revival in the 80's following an apearence at the Reading Rock Festival when thay stepped in to replace Ozzy Osbourne and blew Def Leppord off Stage. I was there! A truly brilliant live band with one of the best Singers in Rock. Massively underated. They also made one of the best films about Rock. Slade in Flame. Years ahead of its time as it tried to show the reality of Band life on the road. Semi autobiographical and all material written by the Band. We have had students at our school go from being high school seniors straight to being college sophomores because they have earned all those credits (here, it is through the local community college). And just think how much tuition she is saving you. I think our kids pay $5 a credit or so. Where else are you going to get in a college class for $15 a semester. Innsbrook was a beautiful venue out in the middle of some fine country scenery. There was a large crowd and they all seemed to love the music. It was a family affair, people brought friends, kids and pets to the show which was also watched by dozens of horses in attendance in the next field over. The band sounded very good from way back at the SWAG table but I had a good view of everything and the sound system was loud even back where I was. I really enjoyed this show that capped off a great born to see Wilder weekend. I met several die-hard long time Webb fans at this show. I will send Hunter some photos tomorrow. It was a great show. I agree that the second set was smokin' good. I had to drive all the way to St. Louis to spend some time with my brother Buckwheat Cheney, who lives across the street from me in Beaver, OH. Got to take the Tater Tots to the show and Webb and the guys signed all their SWAG items for them and made them feel welcome. We got to see Beatle Bob formally acknowledge the best band in St. Louis by dancing all night by the stage. He has to be the most energetic person in the entire world, he was non-stop. The bar had some really nice art-work-type-icons on the wall, such as a full size "Rat Fink" and a "Zap Comix" eyeball and the food wasn't bad either. I met Brandmanjr and will miss him at Webb Fest IV, but congrats on the new role! It is always a pleasure to spend time with Mike and Dori and Tommy Lee and the lovely Patrice. I am still recovering from the 1200 mile weekend travel but it was worth every mile of it to see Webb and company three nights in a row! Will post photos tomorrow. I was there with my whole family and got to meet Webb during the intermission. I love the new CD, especially the songs WW wrote. It's funny, the first time I listened to the CD, I was able to pick out the songs he wrote himself, without even looking at the credits. He really has a gift for songwriting with distinctive melodies and phrasing. Anyway, it was great to hear them play most of the new CD live. I was impressed at how tight the new material sounded.
