St. Louis show July 30th

Posted By: tommylee on July 31st, 12:37PM. We had a lotta fun at the Gramophone last night. Arrived just in time to help load in (in a light rain), admired Dale Watson's bus, and had great catfish & fixin's with Mr. Comet at Sweetie Pie's. No outa towners appeared, I guess Nese and the kychoppers couldn't make it to town this time. The club filled up nicely with what turned out to be a loud, enthusiastic crowd, and we ended up working the merch table up front. Many thanks to Chris for the company and help! The band sounded wonderful, all four in excellent form and Webb's voice ringin' loud and clear. Jimmy was especially forceful, pounding his kit like it was a recalcitrant lawn mower. There was plenty of dancin' and yellin' as the guys played the following: Big Time Cannonball Rough Rider Come Around Pretty Little Lights (really lit 'em up!) Lookin' For A Fool Wild Honey into One Taste 2 Cool 4 Love Hittin' Where It Hurts Don't Slander Me (extra psychedelic!) Slow Death Changing Colors Ju Ju Man Still Water Prertty Is into Honky Tonkin' In Miss Tough It Out Encore was Jumpin' Jack Flash, very flashy We stayed for several songs from Dale, almost all of them were about drinkin'. He has a fine band with fiddle, pedal steel and standup bass to go with his Telecaster leads. Classic roadhouse country in look and sound, but his vocals were a little bit low in the mix. Finally wore out and headed for home. Many thanks to Webb and the Beatnecks for comin' to town and good luck on the remainder of the trip!

Brief Webb mention in Steve Forbert article

Posted By: Hunter on July 30th, 9:35AM. "The Oil Song" keeps Steve Forbert moving http://www.mysanantonio.com/entertainment/music/the_oil_song_keeps_steve_forbert_moving_99552974.html [...] Forbert's songs have been covered by Keith Urban ("Romeo's Tune"), Roseanne Cash ("What Kinda Girl?") and Webb Wilder ("Samson and Delilah's Beauty Shop"). "The versions I've heard of my songs have been quite good," he said. "I can't see (getting covered) as anything but a plus. I do pitch things to people, but it never works. It's very different now. There was a time when people like Jimmy Webb or Harlan Howard could write a song and feel confident it would be recorded within three months. Now music is such a fine-tuned business." [....]

OT: Ian Hunter unplugged by ELP

Posted By: t60hack on July 29th, 8:31PM. I've always used Chuck Berry music as kind of a "litmus test" whenever I go out to hear a new local cover band. Whenever they ask for requests, I'll ask for some Chuck. You can usually tell what you're in for when they try to do Johnny B. Goode. Although if Chuck heard how I hack his stuff, he'd probably jump on a plane to Ohio and beat speed knots on my head!! Gary

OT: Ian Hunter unplugged by ELP

Posted By: Glom on July 29th, 1:09PM. I certainly do remember the Ian Hunter "H" guitar. Maybe you could get the Tone Chaprone to meld two "V" bodies into a "Flying W" Rearview guitar for you. A "W" would particularly lend itself to a double-neck design. No need for the full Rick Neilsen 5-neck. Cub Kod's Third Rule of Rock & Roll became particularly significant to me one night when a guy who worked with our bass player's wife came over to play with our band. We were having trouble finding any kind of musical common ground. I finally asked him, "Do you know any Chuck Berry music?" He replied, "No." That's when we all realized that we were NEVER going to find any musical common ground with him.

I guess a Flying 'W' would be untoward. Funny, that you should mention Cub. That Mott show I saw? The opening act was Brownsville Station! They were GREAT AND funny. Cool, Glom. There IS a difference between rock and rock & roll; beware of inferior imitations (avoid contact with any musician who doesn't know how to play Chuck Berry music). Webb - Have you given any thought to appearing at WebbFest in the Ian Hunter "Mott" outfit topped with the Webb Wilder hat?
Brief mention of Knuckleheads show

Posted By: Hunter on July 29th, 5:49AM. http://www.kansascity.com/2010/07/28/2111795/upcoming-shows-in-the-kansas-city.html Webb Wilder has been playing bars, clubs and roadhouses since the mid-1980s, when he flirted with some label success. That was back when big labels took chances on bands that make music like his, which fuses blues, country, surf-rock and old-time roots-rock. His live shows are still a blast of energy, comedy, charm, wit and fun. Wilder performs Saturday night at Knuckleheads, 2715 Rochester. The Slick Brothers open at 9 p.m. Advance tickets are $15. Visit www.knuckleheadskc.com (816-483-1456).

Posted By: Webb Wilder on July 28th, 4:19PM. No doubt, the ELP boys are ace musos. I've never had many Prog leanings as I would imagine any of you might have noticed! I do think that when I saw Mott the Hoople (featuring the aforementioned Mr. Hunter) that it was the first time I realized that there is a difference between Rock and Rock and Roll. They were cool; they had all the trappings of Rock but, played a Jerry Lee Lewis song live! Needless to say, they totally rocked and blew my 17 year old mind. This was quite a while before "Dudes" so the Warehouse in New Orleans was far from full. God bless 'em all from Tarkus to Thunderbuck Ram! WW

Posted By: tater bodine on July 28th, 10:31AM. I've been to several ELP( I'm assuming you mean Emerson Lake and Palmer) shows and they were excellent concerts and some of the most talented musicians I have ever seen. Greg Lake was one of the original members of King Crimson whose music from the 60's still holds up. ELP's "Tarkus" is one of the best albums ever sold. But, that's just my opinion, I could be wrong!

OT: Ian Hunter unplugged by ELP

Posted By: Hunter on July 28th, 7:24AM. From a Facebook post from a friend of mine who regularly reports on the music industry. Ian Hunter and Joe Elliott (from Def Leppard) were playing together at High Voltage on July 25. From my friend's post: According to Ross Halfin: "Shot the end of Joe's set and was just getting into Ian Hunter when the power was pulled after two songs by ELP [who were scheduled to headline the main stage later that night]. Now if I was to say the situation was ugly that is an understatement. Joe Elliott and Ian Hunter got into an altercation with ELP's crew, fists flying. It ruined the whole day, a real bad '70s thug-like atmosphere. Jimmy [Page] and I went in to see Ian and offer our support and Joe was pragmatic, '$@%# it, what can you do?'" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FziSu6pQiw8

Posted By: Exploding Ned on July 26th, 7:57AM. Haveta say, some really good "bad" ideas... "Hittin Where It Hurts" S & M Booth, Fire breathers in the orchestra pit, Employing Go - Go dancers sight unseen. Especially the last one, but then "sight unseen" style (trashy) ladies have always been my weak spot.

Posted By: omatic on July 25th, 11:02AM. Nese, >> getting to the link to purchase tickets >> No matter what I do, invalid syntax. There is a link to a page that describes the event. But the email address itself is not a link. I did it that way to prevent spam-bots from harvesting it and spamming Tater. If that's not what you meant (and I don't know why you'd get "invalid syntax" in any way) then email me a screenshot of the problem, OK?

But it was only in Internet Explorer. It's fixed now. Firefox users would never have seen that problem. Hope this helps. Mike-o

Posted By: Glom on July 22nd, 8:40AM. Today's mailing about Webb and Tom appearing at the Florida Theater mentioned that they'd be playing "Smothers Brothers style". Any other Smothers Brothers fans here? My brother was a big fan, and had all of their records. I liked them a lot, too. My parents took us to see them at the Lyric Theater in 1963. Particularly loved the routine about Tom falling in a vat of chocolate. Remember their first TV show, with Tommy as an angel?

Posted By: its brilliant on July 21st, 5:19PM. I really want to highlight two great WW Unplugged shows. Sat. night is a full night of unpluggedness at the Crimson Moon in Dahlonega, a wonderful city in the mountains of N. Georgia. 8pm and they'll do 2 sets. Top food too, nice atmosphere. Then, Sunday at the Botanical Gardens in Atlanta, Webb and Tom will open for John Hiatt! 8pm start for Webb there. Bring low lawn chairs or blankets. It's a great Wilder Weekend!

Posted By: Frank in TN on July 21st, 10:53AM. Wow, what cosmic timing! Mere minutes ago, I had revisited this thread to re-read this piece, and smiled at Webb's "Jumping Jack Flash" reference (having just heard it at Down Home this past weekend. BTW, Webb, the Stones would be honored. You do that song PROUD, son!) ... when lo and behold, what tune should pop up on my accuradio.com '60s Rock playlist than JJF itself, which is merely my favorite rock song ever (thus my joy when my favorite artiste plays my favorite song!). I can now face the rest of the work day! Oops, did I say I was at work??

Posted By: gil favor on July 20th, 11:15PM. Simonrob, I know what a shilling is ; what I meant was that I didn't know exactly what coin it was that he used as a pick. Shilling, halfpence, farthing, the list goes on and on...I think that Brian wound his own pickups ; I doubt if he fashioned them from scratch. Could be Burns, I don't know.

Posted By: garland on July 20th, 7:21PM. It really was a fantastic show--especially the triple-decker encore! I always love Jumpin' Jack Flash and it was completely unexpected, coming on the heels as it did of a lengthy extended-play version of Gloria. I thought the boys would be done after that G-L-O-R-I-A wallbanger. Thanks WW and Tom and everybody else who made it happen.

Posted By: Simonrob on July 20th, 2:57PM. Gil, a shilling coin is an old English coin. When I grew up, there was a bizarre monetary system involving pounds, shillings and pence. There were 12 pence in a shilling and 20 shillings in a pound. Adding up sums of money could take days and the answer was invariably wrong. Some years ago (what year it was escapes me now, but it was probably between 30 & 40 years back) the British government decided to decimalize. Since then it has been pounds and pence. 100 pence in a pound. When that happened, all the old coins (shillings included) went out of circulation. An interweb search will undoubtedly turn up much more, possibly including a picture of a shilling coin. Now you know.
