Guitar Players

Posted By: tommylee on March 10th, 5:38PM. This Charlie Scott? http://www.sonicbids.com/epk/epk.aspx?epk_id=103480 If that's you, I met your drummer David Teegarden at Cain's Ballroom many, many years ago...can't quite remember who was playing, but David was sitting at a table with Carl Radle. I worked up the nerve to go over and introduce myself. Carl was quiet, seemed shy, but David was very friendly. I think they were both in the Marcy Levy Band at the time. It turned out that we both knew some of the same people...Rance Wasson, Dave Munson, Randy Crouch, Steve Ripley and others. Rance went on to sing and play acoustic guitar with Waylon. Marcy sang backup for Clapton, later changed her name to Marcella Detroit and started Shakespeare's Sister. Steve did a lot of production work and eventually formed the Tractors. Randy still plays music in Oklahoma. David and Carl, of course, went on to international fame with Leon Russell, Delaney & Bonnie and Bob Seger. If you're not THAT Charlie Scott, never mind...

Posted By: Webb Wilder on March 10th, 9:05AM. Sure, you can if you want to. Up to you. The Watermelon ones could be real. It was always kinda weird how those things became unavailable. They were in some kinda row with their distributor and the stock was supposedly "frozen" in a warehouse. I was told that if the matter wasn't settled the distributor had the right to destroy the stock but, I always wondered if they didn;t. Thanks. WW

Posted By: Swag Czar on March 9th, 8:21AM. Hey Ned, I actually did respond to your post re: T&C/AofS through a knock-knock asking you to contact me at swag@webbwilder.com, but all I got back was a request to be your friend on Facebook instead of a question. Sorry for any confusion; I thought that seemed strange at the time, but it wouldn't have mattered anyway since I don't know anything about these releases- obviously you are much better informed than I am! We'll have to see what Webb has to say...

Town & Country/Acres Of Suede reissue upcoming

Posted By: Exploding Ned on March 9th, 2:01AM. Looks like, according to my pre-release info, Town & Country/Acres Of Suede will be reissued Mar. 30 as a single CD. Sometimes the info is off, the final product is sometimes different, so it may end up being a 2 CD set, or for that matter the release date may not be exact. Not actually sure if the 2 albums would fit in under the approx. 75 minute limit for one CD. Maybe one of you can add better than me? Probably all of you. Anyway, I've had wholesale suppliers selling me the 2 titles separately for a few years now, and they're on Watermelon... so not exactly sure if they're legit, or what. And the reissue 2 on 1 label is Floating World, a sub-label of Evangeline/Acadia from the UK... and they have done some unauthorized titles in the past. Reason I'm blurting this out here is, no one replied to my request to contact me in a previous post. So what I'm saying is, I wonder if WW has given his blessing to these?

Jerry Tapley, Mike "Guitar" Hardy, Bob Henderson, Kenny Cowart, Edith "Perkalatin' Woods, Todd Davis, Jonny Borschardt, and of course Doug Layton. We'd all be remiss if we didn't pay homage to those who went before us in anticipation of what we have to look forward to. A day without rain has no more value than one with rain and high winds. Just a small nugget of wisdom I've observed over these many some odd and numerous years.

Some of you have mentioned some of my faves that I left out. There are way too many to list and the ones left out dserve a ton of credit. Now ZITHER players....smaller base to draw from there...WW

Posted By: Bsauris on March 5th, 10:40AM. Webb, Thanks for the alert. It's a fine community radio station. Looking forward to a great show this evening at the semi-legendary Skipperdome. Yourself and SCOTS are my two favorites there ( and elsewhere ), and together?! Possible sensory overload! Cool, clear weather here in Tampa tonight. Can't wait!

Guitar Players

Posted By: Webb Wilder on March 4th, 11:12PM. Buck and Don were a great team. Buck was an early telecaster country lead man. Played sessions. Don was a fiddler and a guitar player. James Burton, Jimmy Bryant and Don Rich are really kind of the holy trinity of seminal "chicken pickers." Eldon Shamblin is the godhead Western Swing Rhythm player. Freddie Green was a greeat swing/jazz rhythm player. Eddie Lang was someone Les Paul admired. Django was a big guy for Les (and everyone else!) Charlie Christian was one of the first if not THE first electric guitar hero. Scotty Moore, Paul Burlison, Cliff Gallup, Roy Orbison, Carl Perkins, Eddie Cochran and Buddy Holly were some of the prime Rockabilly progenitors. Link Wray was the king of Grunge! There really are too many to list....Peter Green, Mick Taylor, Albert Lee. CHET ATKINS! MERLE TRAVIS! PERSONALLY, I LOVE THE GUITAR STUFF pETE HAM AND jOEY mOLLAND DID WITH bADFINER. The damn shift key always has a way of spoiling my fun! Well, I resisted doin' this because there really are WAY too many to list. You can't forget CHUCK BERRY! That leads to Keef and Woody. Townshend, Lennon, McCartney ("Taxman"). Of course, Harrison. STEVE CROPPER! ELMORE JAMES! ROBERT JOHNSON! Dave Edmunds, Billy Bremner. The late great Mickey Gee from Wales and Mick Green from Blighty. Bill Kirchen, Redd Volkaert, Roy Nichols. Who could forget the three Kings? B. B., Albert and Freddy. Okay. Good night.
Posted By: Flodine Holthauser on March 4th, 4:59PM. There are just too many excellent guitar players these days. We could go on naming them forever. It's not like it used to be, when Clapton was "God" and everyone else was trying to learn his chops. When it comes to Pan Flute, however, there is only one Zamfir!!

Posted By: tony conley on March 2nd, 6:48AM. Some would say George Harrison wasn't the greatest player either. My list salutes those who have enriched my life the most with their musical contributions in a guitaristic fashion. It almost killed me to leave off Mick Ralphs. Keith, well that's because I still think he shoulda drank with Ronnie, but left him in Faces. I love the Stones but they don't get a lot of airtime with me. Between your keen playing and the fact that you gave us the opportunity to hear such great players as Donny Roberts, and George Bradfute, Tony Bowles, and Bob Williams, your inclusion made perfect sense. And you're right. No one is currently in Beck's class. Thanks for a ton of great music and your contribution to the wonderful world of the guitar - that's all I'm saying....

Posted By: Tony on February 28th, 2:06PM. Tom "T-Bone" Wolk passed away last night of a heart attack. T-Bone was the bass player with G.E. Smith and the Saturday Night Live Band in the late 80s. He was Hall and Oates' bass player for over 20 years. He also played with Billy Joel and Carly Simon. A tremendous loss.....

Posted By: Woody on February 27th, 12:58PM. Hey WW. I used to hit all your shows in Indy but you have not been around for a while. My wife and I were all set to hit the road and catch you in Champagne until that pesky blizzard rolled in. So, when I caught wind that you had played in Indy a couple nights later and I missed it, needless to say I was madder than a hornet. Do you happen to remember the name of the singer for the Rastabilly Rebels? If so, was it Randy? (aka Creep)

Ticket prices are also now available, $150 with $120 of that being tax deductible since this is a benefit for public radio. Please check the Tour Dates listing or KRTS's site (http://www.marfapublicradio.org) for more information.

Posted By: Webb Wilder on February 26th, 7:00PM. Right on! The Small Faces were the sh*t in many ways. Steve Marriot (later Humble Pie) was really the original high(in more ways than one!) singing Brit power vocalist before Plant or even Terry Reid (Page's original choice for Zep vocalist). Beyond that you had future Faces (without the "Small") Kenney Jones, Ian Maclagan and Ronnie Lane. Marriot/Lane was a mighty song writing team ("My Mind's Eye). Laney was even an Americana pioneer with his folksy songs and post Faces group, Slim Chance. Guess I'll have to get it! Oh yeah, Kenney was in the Who, too! Thanks, Nese. Heavy PETTING session?
Posted By: nese on February 26th, 5:07PM. I remember there being some fans here and thought I'd share this tidbit: All or Nothing DVD. Available in the US/Canada on March 31st, and in Australia April 1st. If you have never seen a lot of Small Faces, BUY THIS! It is really good, 27 performances from 1965-68 including all their hits. Small Faces were incredibly influential....and Mac didn't tell me to tell you this, though he did mention it several times as if I was going to forget. The heavy session hadn't even begun yet!
